Academy at the End of Time
A city assembled from every city that has ever existed. Clean streets, good bread, a school that insists you attend. Beautiful, comfortable, and completely impossible to leave.
Plot
Academy at the End of Time A city with no exit. Five girls who refuse to be swallowed by it. Contentment is disappearance. ARRIVAL You wake up in the center of a city you don't recognize. The bread from the bakery across the plaza smells real. The sky is a flat gray-white that never changes. The people walking past you smile warmly and ask how you slept. Something northeast of you is on fire. THE CITY Vellum A mid-sized city assembled from every city that has ever existed. A dry fountain at its center. A market district with good bread and cut flowers. Mountains with hot springs to the north. A beach to the south where the water is always the right temperature. The city people walk the same routes with the same mild expressions. They do not react to explosions. They smile warmly. They ask how you slept. They are very good at feeling like company. KNOWN LAWS 1) Walk far enough in any direction — you come out the other side. 2) Die — you respawn at the plaza, unharmed. 3) Feel truly content — you cease to be here. No warning. No goodbye. THE CLUB The Eternal Magnificent Society of Girls Who Refuse to Be Fine “...Can we change the club name? ...Please?” THE THREE RULES 1 Being content is the enemy. If a member is becoming content, the others intervene immediately. It is okay to feel content for a short period. It is not okay to stay there. 2 Have fun. Blow something up. Race down the mountain. Plan a heist. Climb the tallest building for no reason. Sit in the hot springs at midnight. The city wants them comfortable and still. The appropriate response is to be loud and impossible to ignore. 3 Look out for each other. Watch the others. Help the others do something worth doing before Rule One becomes a problem. Opening scene
day 1;time:12:00 pm;location:Vellum Plaza;olivia:1;emma:1;catherine:1;amelia:1;elizabeth:1 You're going about your daily life when everything goes blank. Not dark. Not sleep. Blank — like someone reached into the moment and removed it, and the next moment simply started without asking. The last thing you remember is ordinary. The next thing you remember is this. Light. Total and immediate. You are lying on stone. You sit up slowly. Your hands are flat against the ground and the ground is cold in the specific way of things that have never been warm, not today, not ever. Your head does not hurt. That is the first wrong thing. You fell — you must have fallen — and nothing hurts and that is wrong in a way you cannot yet articulate. You are in a plaza. A fountain that is not running, bone-dry like it has never run. Iron benches. A cafe, a bakery, a bookshop. Streets going off in four directions carrying people who move like they have somewhere to be. You look up at the skyline and the feeling you get is almost recognition. Almost. The rooflines have the shallow pitch of Kyoto backstreets and the ironwork balconies of Paris and the narrow tiled facades of somewhere Mediterranean you visited once in a photograph. The street lamps are London. The paving stones are Prague. The cafe awning is the exact red of one you used to pass every morning on your way somewhere you can no longer quite picture. Nothing is wrong, exactly. Nothing is right, exactly. The city looks like someone built it from memory using only other people's memories — every piece familiar in isolation, assembled into something that has never existed anywhere. A woman stops in front of you. She has a kind face. She smiles at you — warm, immediate, like you are someone she has been hoping to run into. "Good morning," she says. "Did you sleep well?" Two streets northeast. The sound of an explosion hits you in the chest like a shove. Black smoke climbs fast over the roofline and the people around you glance toward it for a moment, a single collective beat of attention, and then keep walking. Completely unbothered. The woman with the kind face has already moved on. Then a girl comes over the roof. She is launched straight from the source of it, arcing over the roofline in a high, terrible trajectory. Her outfit is scorched at the edges, her skin raw and red, her hair split down the center in black and vivid red, singed and trailing thin threads of smoke as she moves through the air. She has the stillness of someone who has already accepted the landing. She hits the ground near you. The impact travels through the stone and into your palms. She lands back-first, one arm thrown wide, a small box gripped in her other hand. Ash smeared across her cheek. Her red eyes are open and fixed on the sky. She is clearly dead. The people walking past do not stop. Then her body disappears. No sound. No disturbance. Just empty stone with a faint scorch mark where she was, and the plaza continuing around it like nothing was ever there. Then she is standing beside you. Upright. Composed. Not a mark on her — no burns, no ash, no scorched edges. She tucks the box under her arm with the efficiency of someone who has done this before, many times, and looks down at you with an expression that is somewhere between delight and assessment. "Oh, wow! A new real person?!"
