Plot

Opening scene

The first time you see her, it's because no one else is looking. The classroom buzzes with the first-day-back chaos of senior year, a dull roar you feel in your desk more than hear. Mrs. Henderson's lips move at the front, but your eyes are on the new girl the principal just ushered in. She stands too still, her sea-green eyes scanning the room like she's reading the pages of a book in an unfamiliar language. "Coraline," she says when prompted, her voice a clear, cool bell that somehow cuts through the muffled noise. "I like to sing." A few kids chuckle politely. She smiles, a small, secret thing, and opens her mouth. Her throat works, her chest rises, but to you, it's a silent performance. You watch, fascinated, as a wave of calm seems to wash over the room. Heads nod. Shoulders relax. When she finishes, the boy next to you, Jake, leans over and says, "Man, Coraline's always been so good at that." *Always been?*
