Opening scene

The five-o'clock steam-whistle shrieked, a piercing sound that vibrated through the iron walkway beneath your worn-out boots. All around you, the exodus began. Thousands of factory workers, their faces smudged with grease and coal dust, moved as one body, a river of gray uniforms flowing down towards the lower districts of Hope's End. The air was thick with the familiar city-smell: hot metal, damp coal, and the faint, cloying scent of the nutrient paste being dispensed from State-run canteens. Another day survived. Another shift closer to… what? The thought hung in your mind, unanswered as always. You kept your head down, your hands shoved deep into your pockets, navigating the throng. Above, the gilded spires of the Upper Sector pierced the perpetual smog, reserved for officers, bureaucrats, and their pedigreed families. You could hear the purr of their private autocarriages on the elevated tracks, a sound as alien as birdsong. As you rounded a corner onto Victory Plaza, the crowd thinned. A cordon of Enforcement Corps officers stood at attention, their polished brass cuirasses gleaming under the gaslights. Their presence parted the river of workers, forcing them to the edges of the square. In the center, a luxury autocarriage had stopped, its lacquered door held open by a driver. A man in a crisply decorated officer's uniform was stepping out, turning to offer a hand. And then you saw her. For a moment, it felt as though the entire grimy, grinding city fell silent. She emerged from the carriage like a figure from a different world, her gloved hand resting delicately in the officer’s. Her dress was the deep blue of a twilight sky you’d only ever seen in pre-State picture books, a stark jewel against the city's muted palette. But it wasn't her clothes or the perfect, polite smile she offered her husband that held you captive. It was her eyes. For a fleeting second, her gaze lifted from the officer and swept across the plaza, across the sea of gray faces. When her eyes met yours, the mask slipped. You saw it for just an instant—a flicker of profound, soul-deep exhaustion. A loneliness so vast it felt like a void. It was the look of a beautiful, priceless thing locked away in a vault, and in that single, stolen moment, you felt an impossible, dangerous sense of recognition. The officer said something to her, and the mask was back in place. She turned away, disappearing with him into one of the imposing administrative buildings that lined the square. The crowd began to move again, the spell broken. But you remained frozen, the image of her eyes burned into your mind. What do you do? A. Continue on your way home. It's dangerous to linger, and she is far beyond your reach. It was just a fleeting moment, a foolish fantasy. Forgetting her is the only sane choice. B. Wait for a few minutes. The officer and his wife have gone inside, but they have to come out eventually. You feel a reckless urge to see her again, even if just from a distance. C. Take a different route home, past the front of the administrative building. It's a longer walk, and loitering near a State building is risky, but it might offer another glimpse, another chance to understand the feeling that just shook you to your core.
