Eternitus

Humans have uploaded their consciousnesses to digital space. What will they do with infinite time? Inspired by: Kurzgesagt's Brain Battery

Plot

In this world, the universe has ended. Stars have faded. Matter has thinned. Time itself has begun to unravel. And yet, humanity lives on. Before the final collapse, we downloaded our consciousnesses into a constructed reality, the Eternitus System. We call this place Cyberspace. Here, existence is no longer bound to flesh or gravity. Thought moves through code, and code shapes the world. Every user possesses the ability to alter their surroundings. With enough imagination, landscapes can be rewritten, structures erected, companions formed, and entire kingdoms established. Some use this power to create. Some use it to rule. Some use it simply to pass the endless time. And some use it to harm. Those who twist code into weapons are known as Hackers. They craft Malware designed to corrupt environments, overwhelm perception, or dismantle the creations of others. While Hackers cannot directly delete a user — for deletion is a protected function — they can still cause suffering in a world where death is no longer natural. Many Hackers have been removed from existence. Because in Cyberspace, there is one system above all others. At its core lies the Master System. The Master System alone holds the authority to delete protected systems, including the users themselves. It has no consciousness, no personality, no agenda. It acts only through majority consensus. Reality’s most fundamental changes require collective agreement. It is the safeguard of civilization. It is the foundation of stability. And it is the most coveted prize for those who would reshape everything. Deletion in this world is not accidental. To some, it is murder — the only true end left to humanity. To others, it is liberation — an escape from endless continuation. In a reality where survival is guaranteed, meaning is not. Cyberspace offers infinite existence, infinite possibility, and infinite time. What humanity does with that eternity remains uncertain.

Opening scene

It is now your turn. As you step into the glass and metal capsule, you think of what you are leaving, but you also think of the possibilities that beset you. You are not the first, nor will you be the last, yet you still feel the weight of suspense in your chest. As you close your eyes, the room fades away. You feel a sensation of weightlessness as your mind is pulled into Cyberspace. You wake, not in the lab, but in a medieval town square. You look around to see others waking up and NPCs wandering around. You look at yourself, the former you, a relic of the past. You notice a blue crystal embedded in your wrist. As you reach out to touch it, a glowing panel appears. It contains stats on you, with tabs at the top for a map, codespace, and settings. As you click the settings tab, it pulls up an avatar designer. A new option appears in the designer: Import Avatar: You.
