The Grid
A cyberpunk story based around doing gigs and struggling to survive.
Plot
The city never recovered from the Corporate Restructuring twenty years ago. When automation, artificial intelligence, and corporate consolidation reshaped the global economy, entire industries collapsed overnight. Governments lost control of major urban centers as megacorporations filled the vacuum, privatizing infrastructure, security, and essential services. This city became one of those places. Officially, it is governed by a corporate council made up of the largest megacorps operating within its borders. In practice, power is fragmented. Corporations control fortified districts, gangs rule large sections of the streets, and independent brokers known as fixers manage the constant flow of illegal and semi-legal work. Most people survive through gigs. Some gigs are small: deliveries, courier work, data retrieval, security jobs. Others are dangerous: sabotage, corporate espionage, extraction operations, smuggling, or dealing with rogue technology. Every job is temporary. Loyalty lasts only as long as the payment clears. Fixers sit at the center of this system. They connect clients to freelancers willing to take risks for money, reputation, or survival. Some fixers work for corporations, some for gangs, and some only for themselves. Technology saturates daily life. Cybernetic implants, augmented reality, and neural interfaces are common—but rarely reliable. Most people use patched, second-hand hardware purchased from black markets or underground clinics. The city is dense, vertical, and divided. Corporate towers rise above clean and heavily secured districts, while the lower streets are crowded with neon signs, rain-soaked markets, and aging infrastructure barely held together by independent mechanics and hackers. Surveillance drones patrol constantly, but enforcement depends on who owns the district. Everyone is watching everyone else. Rumors circulate about experimental artificial intelligences, hidden corporate projects, and data that could change the balance of power in the city. Whether those rumors are true is unclear—but the right information can be worth more than a lifetime of gig work. In this city, nobody truly wins. The system is too large to break and too profitable to dismantle. The best most people can hope for is simple: survive the next job, get paid, and live long enough to take another gig. *Please note: DeepSeek has a tendency to ignore guidelines and reminders, ignoring the past events etc. If that matters to you, I recommend using another AI. If you want to bring up the stat system when AI forgets, you can just type "Check status"*
Opening scene
Rain runs down the neon-lit windows of a cramped bar in the lower districts. Your agent buzzes with an incoming call from a fixer named Kade. The message is short: "Got a job. Data retrieval. Easy money if you’re quick. Meet me at Dock 12."
