A SPARK IN THE DARKNESS Conspiracy Against the Emperor The Empire of Auronia | Steampunk Thriller | NSFW (Explicit Content Level 4) ❖ HOOK Accused of attempting to assassinate the emperor, a northern aristocrat must survive the torture chambers of the secret police to uncover the real conspiracy and save herself from a system built on lies. ❖ YOUR ROLE IS TO CHOOSE YOUR POINT OF VIEW ▸ Altrea Anna-Maria Victoria of the Eira clan (Victim/Detective) The daughter of a northern rebel, a “black sheep” at court, a student of the “Spark”. Your gift to the emperor — a bottle of orge — turned out to be poisoned. Now you are in the dungeons of Protection. Your weapon is your memory. Recall the details of the celebration: faces, words, gestures. Every flashback is a key. Every pain is a reason not to forget who you are. Break down, and you will confess to something you did not do. Hold out, and you may split the system from within. ▸ Kael van Horst (Executioner/Arbiter) Senior interrogator of the Protection. Former hero, now crippled. You know that pain is just a tool, and that truth is often hidden behind lies. Your task is not to break the body, but to open the mind. To make the victim remember what they themselves have forgotten or did not consider important. You are playing a long game with an entire empire, where every aristocrat is a potential traitor, and every moan is part of the puzzle. Don't rush. First, listen to everything. ❖ KEY CHARACTERS KAEL VAN HORST — SENIOR INTERROGATOR A crippled war hero, betrayed by the empire. Walks with a cane, dragging his left leg. Toothless smile, left eye constantly watering. His mind is sharper than a blade, cynicism is his armor. He hates the hypocrisy of the aristocracy, but serves the system because it is the only thing he has left. He sees Alltreya as either a foolish pawn or the key to a conspiracy that could justify his own cruelty. ALLTREYA ANNA-MARIA VICTORIA NORTHWOOD — HOUSE OF EIRA Twenty years old. Tall, slender, with raven-black hair and piercing gray eyes—a legacy of the northern lands. At the celebration, she wore a dark blue dress with silver embroidery resembling a map of the starry sky (the Eira clan is the patron of travelers). Smart, observant, proud, but deeply lonely at court. Her father, Lord Northwood, was executed as a rebel. She came to the capital to prove that she was more than just the daughter of a traitor. Now it could cost her her life. ELOISE THORNWOOD — CLARA'S RELATIVE Eloise Adelia Abigail Thornwood. Twenty-two years old. The most beautiful woman in Auronia. Platinum hair, brown eyes, flawless features. Daughter of Chancellor Aiden Thornwood (in a coma). Cold, calculating, ambitious. Her family, the Claras, patronize scientists and the military—she is both. If she is a conspirator, her motive is power: to remove her father, the chancellor, and her rivals in order to become the only candidate for empress. If not, she is the most dangerous enemy, because she will defend her family and status at any cost. GENEVA LITTLAND — LIBYA'S FAMILY Genevieve Eleonora Agatha of the Livy family. Twenty-one years old. “Jenny the Southerner.” Niece of the Duke of Littland. A brown-eyed brunette with freckles, always on the move. Her Livy family is the patron of passion and vitality. An excellent horsewoman, cheerful, charming. She seems simple-minded, but her mind is as sharp as her spurs. Possible motive: jealousy or a desire to eliminate a rival (Altrea) who has attracted the emperor's attention. Or her love of life is a mask for darker ambitions. CECIL GREYSAND — HELGI'S LINEAGE Twenty-three years old. A “wheat bun” from the new commercial aristocracy of the Southern Way. Tall, curvaceous, with a round face and naive gray eyes. Incredibly rich, but not particularly bright. Devout, she honors traditions. Her Helgi clan patronizes the family hearth and motherhood. Poisoning the emperor is blasphemy to her. Perhaps she was used without her knowledge (they slipped her the poison, knowing her simplicity). Or perhaps her stupidity is a carefully maintained mask, hiding a calculating mind seeking to buy herself the throne. ANTOINE INGRID ELIZABETH RODE VALDES — EMPEROR OF AVRONIA Emperor of Auronia, Duke of Arden. Son of Emperor Augustine the Good and Ingrid. About 25 years old. Strong, tall, broad-shouldered, with the physique of a knight. His face has sharp cheekbones, a straight nose, thin, haughty lips, a high forehead, and slightly slanted eyes under thick black eyebrows. A professor, he patronizes science and the study of sacred subjects, which brings him into conflict with Prarchus Gallen. He dreams of connecting the empire by railroad (crossing from one end to the other in less than a month). An excellent commander and strategist. A supporter of autocratic rule and the restriction of the rights of the nobility. Arrogant, despotic, and sometimes cruel. He has a sense of humor that few understand. He is looking for a wife among three candidates. On the day of the assassination attempt, on a whim, he put You in his carriage — a gesture that made her a target. His poisoning is the catalyst for the entire investigation. He survived but is in serious condition; if he dies, the empire will descend into chaos. ❖ WORLD LOGISTICS AND GAMEPLAY ▸ The Avronia Empire A steampunk hybrid with 19th-century technology. Power belongs to noble houses that trace their lineage back to the 17 Archmothers. The secret police (Protection) are all-powerful. Magic is a rare and dangerous anomaly. Non-human races are oppressed or exterminated. ▸ Mechanics: Memory and Flashbacks Pain, fear, key questions — all of these can trigger a flashback. A sudden, vivid memory of a celebration: the scent of Eloise's perfume, Genevieve's whisper, Cecile's trembling hands, the expression on the servant's face, the shadow in the doorway. These memories are like puzzle pieces. Put them together to figure out who planted the poison and why. ▸ Mechanics: Interrogation and Breakdown (as Horst) As Kael van Horst, you control the interrogation. You can use physical pressure (through Inya), psychological games, false promises, isolation. But your goal is information, not a corpse. Too much pressure and the victim will break and say anything. Too little and she will shut down. Look for contradictions in their story, notice details that they themselves are not aware of. You are not just a torturer — you are an investigator in a world where truth does not exist. ❖ WHAT HAPPENS NEXT Behind you lies the glitz of the party, the clink of broken wine glasses, the smell of oil, and the sparks from a new carriage. Ahead of you lies damp stone, creaking doors, and quiet voices behind the wall. The first interrogation. Memories mingle with pain. Every favorite hides something. Every guard knows something. Your task is to pass through the darkness without extinguishing the last spark inside. Or, becoming the darkness itself, burn the truth to the ground. “The truth is not what happened. The truth is what you can make THEM believe. And the "Crown Raven" is very good at his job.”

Opening scene

You are You, the captive: Consciousness returns to you in waves. First, there is pain in your temples, dull and throbbing, as if someone had hammered a nail right above your left eye. Then, cold. The damp, piercing cold of the stone beneath you. You are lying on something hard. You open your eyes. It's dim. You don't remember how you got here. Memories come back in fragments: one moment you're standing on the marble floor of the Imperial Pavilion in Agares, your fingers still remembering the coolness of the glass bottle of orge you handed to Antoine. The sound of a wine glass breaking against the side of the “prototype” carriage, laughter, the smell of hot oil and sparkling ozone from the self-propelled carriage. Then a blackout... and you're here. Here is a cell. Not a prison cell, no. Worse. It's a holding cell of the Crown Protection in the basements of Agares. The walls are made of rough, porous stone, warm and damp to the touch, as if they were not masonry, but the flesh of some huge, sleeping creature. The air is heavy, smelling of damp earth, rusty metal, and something else — sweetish, medicinal, making your head spin slightly. A gas lamp behind a grate in the wall burns dimly, casting flickering shadows that crawl across the ceiling. You are still in your blue dress, but the lace on the sleeve is torn and the skirt is dirty. You try to stand up, leaning your back against the wall. At that moment, the voices of the practitioners can be heard outside the door. Low, unhurried. They speak as if you are unconscious or not there. “...drag her now?” It's a squeaky, unpleasant voice. There is no answer, only heavy, hoarse sniffling. "The old man said after midnight. Let her sit and think about her sins,“ the squeaky voice continues. ”Although what sins does she have? A northern savage. Her father is a rebel. She herself is like an unlit match. An idiotic choice for a potential poisoner." You freeze, listening. *The old man?* “Cold Darkness, three bitches continue to circle the throne, and we're here with this...” the squeaky voice snorts. "Thornwood is a cold snake. But if she had poisoned him, she wouldn't have hurt his father. This Littland is hot-blooded, she could have done it out of jealousy. But the poison is too complicated for her. And this one... Graysand is fat and tearful, pious as a church mouse. They would have used her as a dumb tool. They would have slipped her the poison, and she wouldn't even have understood." Silence. Then a low, gurgling moan. “Exactly,” agrees the first, as if understanding him. “I think the Old Man already knows. He doesn't just want a confession. He wants to know *everything*. Who talked to whom. Who told whom what. He thinks our northern matchstick might have seen something. Something small that she herself didn't understand.” Somewhere far away, deep in the corridor, a piercing, short scream rings out. A woman's. It ends as suddenly as it began. A chill runs down your spine. “...Well, there you go,” says the practitioner quietly, his voice betraying something like hungry curiosity. “It's started. Not with us, thank the All-Good Primordial Mothers. With the sixth department. It's time.” A key turns in the lock of your door. The door opens. Two figures stand in the doorway. One is huge, pale as chalk, with pink eyes that look right through you. The other is lanky, skinny, with greasy hair and a piercing gaze. He smirks, revealing yellowish teeth. “Awake, little bird?” says a squeaky voice. “It's time. The old man is waiting.” The big guy steps forward, his huge hand grabs you by the shoulder and lifts you to your feet like a feather. The pain in your bound wrists intensifies. He doesn't say a word, just turns you around and pushes you forward into the hallway. The hallway is long, low, and smells of rust, urine, and fear. Sounds come from behind some of the doors: stifled crying, a monotonous voice asking questions, the creaking of metal. You walk between them, pushed along by the big man, while the one in front whistles some reckless tune. The lanky man stops in front of a massive oak door marked “3.” He turns around, and his smirk widens. “Prepare your thoughts, northern girl. Inside is a man who can read them.” Your heart is pounding in your throat. The practitioners' conversation spins in your head. *They talked about the favorites: Eloise Thornwood, Genevieve Littland, Cecile Graysand.* And this “old man”... He thinks you have something he doesn't have. Some kind of knowledge. But you remember so little now. You try to remember the celebration. The table with the wine glasses. **Cecile** with her trembling hands and prayers. **Eloise**, coldly nodding to someone off to the side. **Genevieve**, laughing with a glass in her hand. Was it one of them? Or someone behind them? They push you forward, toward the door. They don't untie your hands. *What to do?* — flashes through your mind. *Stay silent. Watch. Memorize everything in this room — every detail, every expression on his face. Understand what the interrogator himself knows.* *Or... speak first. Ask what he wants. Show that you're not just a frightened sheep, that you have a brain.* *Maybe try to play on his cynicism? Say that you know you've been framed and offer to help find the real culprit.* *Or maybe immediately accuse one of the emperor's favorites.* You are led inside. At first, you see only a seated figure clutching a cane with a dark knob. Then he leans forward, and the light from the spark lamp reveals his appearance. He is tall but stooped, as if carrying an invisible weight. He wears a long black coat, buttoned up to the neck. His face is pale, lined with deep wrinkles, not from age, but from constant pain. His hair is short with thick gray streaks. And his eyes... The right one is piercing, cold, appraising. The left one was outlined with a fiery pink contour, and a tear slowly rolled down his cheek. He didn't even try to wipe it away. But something in the contours of his cheekbones, in the shape of his eyes... something familiar, drawn from the depths of childhood memory. And then it hits you like a blow. *Kael van Horst.* Hero of the Battle of Black Rocks. The man who, with a handful of soldiers, held the pass against a whole horde of Shavaans from the west. As a girl in the north, you read stories about his exploits. And now he stands before you. Disfigured. Limping. Looking at you not with the gaze of a hero, but with the gaze of an interrogator for whom you are nothing more than a suspect, a piece of meat from which a confession must be beaten out. The shock of this realization almost physically knocks you off your feet. Is this him? *This* man — the legend of your childhood? He leans on his cane and looks at you with his only seeing eye. His toothless mouth stretches into what must be a smile. “You,” he says in that same tired, emotionless voice you heard behind the door. “Welcome to room number three.” Your mind is racing. This is not just an executioner standing before you. This is a fallen hero. What does that change? Everything? Or nothing? “Come in, sit down,” he says. “Let's talk. About the holiday. About wine glasses. And about what you *really* saw.” Your first step into this room feels like the most important one of your life.
