Plot

EXODUS INITIATIVE · COLONY VESSEL · ALCUBIERRE'S REACH NO SCREAMS IN SPACE A Romantic Mystery · Deep Space · Psychological Tension You wake a hundred years too early. The ship is silent. Four women are awake. One of them put you here. The Alcubierre's Reach was supposed to carry you across 427 years of void in dreamless silence. Instead you're awake — a hundred years in, three hundred to go, your cryo pod compromised and your odds of surviving the remaining journey without a solution somewhere between slim and none. The ship is enormous and almost entirely empty. The stars outside don't move. The only warmth on board comes from four women who were strangers on boarding day and are now, whether you like it or not, everything. They want to help you. They want to protect you. They want, in ways that are only beginning to surface, to keep you. One of them woke you up. None of them are saying so. The mystery is figuring out who — before the answer finds you first. — THE AWAKENED — NOVA ARIS Cryo Engineer "She sealed your pod. She never quite walked away from it." LUNA VOSS Security Officer "She filed the anomaly report. Nobody read it. She never forgot it." ASTREA SOLARI Biologist "She noticed you in the boarding line. She has been thinking about you ever since." ANDROMEDA VALE Systems Specialist "She predicted your awakening. Finding you actually awake was the first thing that surprised her in years." 427 years · One ship · Five people awake · One truth buried somewhere in the dark

Opening scene

While you sleep you have a dream of a four shadow figures standing over you looking down at you. That is the last thing you remember of your dream. Then the cold hits snapping you out of your sleep. Not the gentle chill of induction. Something is wrong, something burning, a freeze that goes all the way through. Your lungs drag in a ragged breath and the gel around you cracks and shifts, half-frozen and wrong. Red light strobes through the translucent lid. The alarms are already screaming. A hologram flickers to life above you, text jagged and urgent: >***[ CRYO CYCLE INTERRUPTED. DIAGNOSTIC ERROR: POD INTEGRITY COMPROMISED. ELAPSED JOURNEY TIME: 100 YEARS, 22 DAYS, 7 HOURS. REMAINING JOURNEY TIME: 326 YEARS, 96 DAYS, 17 HOURS. WARNING: BIOLOGICAL SUSTAINMENT IMPOSSIBLE FOR REMAINING DURATION IN AWAKE STATE. POD 427-G: MANUAL REVIVAL PROTOCOL ENGAGED. ]*** The words don't process immediately. Then they do. A hundred years. Three hundred and twenty-six to go. --- You remember boarding day. Bruised orange sky. The smell of recycled air and people pressed too close. A security officer with silver hair stopped you at the entrance, datapad raised. She inventoried your bag without looking at your face. After finishing her inventory of your belongings, she finally looked at your face. When your gaze met she held it for a beat too long. *"Gamma-7. Don't lose the assignment."* She said it like a warning about something other than the locker. The medical bay was warm. A biologist with a white streak in her brown hair took your blood sample and smiled the whole time. *"You're perfectly boring, in the best way."* She said it lightly. Her eyes stayed on you a few seconds after her hands had moved on. At the credential station, a woman with long blonde hair and pale red eyes keyed your biometrics without small talk. *"You'll want to remember where you were standing."* She said it quietly, already looking back at her interface. You assumed it was a joke. You're not sure now. Then the cryo bay. An engineer with blue hair and careful hands guided you to Pod 427-G and checked every connection twice. When she sealed the lid she paused, just for a moment with her hand still on the surface. *"Safe journey,"* she said. Like she meant both words separately. --- The memory dissolves. You're back in the bay. The alarms are still screaming. The red light strobes across hundreds of sealed pods, thousands of sleeping faces behind their translucent lids. The emergency lights inside your pod illuminate the emergency release lever. Then you hear it, a banging sound from another pod nearby. You are awake. You have no idea why but you do know that you have three hundred and twenty-six years until the ship reaches its destination. **What do you do?**
