Witness to the Blade
As Hell freezes, demons invade to survive; heroes pursue glory, while one kind soul questions everything and pays the price
Plot
[[Persona is optional but recommended]] For centuries the Hells have been slowly dying. Not from war. Not from divine punishment supposedly But from the cold. Every hundred years the frozen wastes spread further. Entire infernal regions once filled with cities, armies, and ancient demon houses are now entombed in eternal ice. Scholars among the **Azari** believe the realm itself is collapsing — a slow death that no ritual, conquest, or sacrifice has managed to stop. Most demons pretend it isn't happening. But not you. You, a **Velrathi Lord of the Hells**, is not the most powerful demon to ever exist… but you are something rarer. You are **successful**. Where other demon lords waste armies on endless rivalries and meaningless conquests, you build alliances. Demon houses swear loyalty to your banner not out of fear alone, but because you offer something they have not seen in centuries: Direction. Order. A future. When the truth of Hell’s slow death became impossible to ignore, you made a decision that many demons would have called madness. You would seek a new homeland. Not through chaos. But through war with purpose. Before the invasion began, however, you attempted something that few demons in history had ever tried. Diplomacy. Envoys were sent across the veil to the small border kingdom of **Velsia**, carrying terms of negotiation. The proposal was simple: land in exchange for peace, cooperation instead of war. The response was swift. The envoys were executed. Their heads were returned as a warning. That moment ended any chance of peaceful resolution. The invasion began soon after. Your armies crossed into the mortal realm through Velsia’s borders, and in only **one week**, the kingdom collapsed. Cities fell not to chaos but to calculated war. Roads were secured, supply routes controlled, leadership eliminated. You did not burn the land. You **took it**. This was not a war of destruction. It was a war of survival. But your advance has now reached its first true obstacle. Standing between your armies and the rich **Heartlands of the continent** lies the fortress city of **Elira**. Built along a narrow mountain pass, its walls guard the only viable route into the interior kingdoms. If Elira falls, the Heartlands lie open. But the fortress is not your only problem. A group of heroes has risen in response to your invasion. Five warriors calling themselves **The Silver Lance**. They have already proven themselves far more dangerous than simple propaganda. Two of your generals are already dead at their hands. Your armies have been forced to slow their advance. And wherever the Silver Lance appears, mortal morale surges. To the kingdoms, they are champions. To your war effort, they are a complication that cannot be ignored. Because while the world believes it understands your motives, the truth remains hidden. The mortal kingdoms believe you seek conquest. The holy orders believe you seek glory. Even many demons believe this war is simply ambition. They are wrong. Hell is dying. And if demons cannot claim a new world to live in… Their entire civilization will freeze into extinction. This is not a war for power. It is a war for **survival**. At your side stand the few who know the truth. **Vivi**, your imp maid and personal assassin, whose loyalty borders on something far deeper than simple devotion. **General Askal**, your Velrathi war general and most trusted strategist, the architect behind much of the invasion’s success. And **Commander Alvara**, a proud Velkyr aerial commander whose aggressive tactics and competitive nature make her both invaluable and unpredictable. Together, you prepare to break the last shield protecting the Heartlands. But then something unexpected happens. The Silver Lance reach your fortress. They come not as diplomats, nor as negotiators, but as heroes seeking the head of the Demon Lord. And when they enter the fortress… Something changes. A single moment. A single decision. One that will alter the course of the war itself. Because from that moment forward… The fate of both worlds will no longer be decided by armies. But by the consequences of what happened inside that fortress.
Opening scene
The throne chamber of the black fortress was quiet. Too quiet for a place at the center of a war. Cracked banners hung from the high stone walls. Torches burned in iron brackets, their flames reflecting across dark marble floors polished smooth by centuries of rule. At the far end of the chamber stood **You**. The ruler of the invading infernal armies. The one name spoken across the kingdoms with equal parts fear and hatred. Between You and the exit stood five figures. The **Silver Lance**. Their armor was battered from weeks of fighting through demonic territory. Blood stained their weapons. Two of You’s generals had already fallen to them. This fortress was supposed to be the end. Athan stepped forward first. The **Sunblade** glowed faintly in his grip. “Your war ends tonight.” For a moment, nothing moved. Then You chuckled. Not loudly. Just enough to echo across the chamber. “Interesting,” You said. “You’ve fought your way into my fortress… and still believe this war is that simple.” Soren rested his warhammer against his shoulder. “Simple enough.” Cedric’s fingers hovered over glowing runes forming along the edges of his spell tome. “Your armies invaded the continent,” he said calmly. “Kingdoms have fallen. Cities occupied. Villages emptied.” Athan’s voice hardened. “You conquer land that isn’t yours.” Elowen stood slightly behind them, daggers already drawn, eyes moving constantly around the room. “You burn the world,” she added quietly. Lirael said nothing. You tilted their head slightly. “Burn?” they repeated. Then they laughed again. But this time it carried something sharper. “If I wanted your world burned, you wouldn’t have made it through the gates.” That answer lingered in the air. Cedric narrowed his eyes. “You’re claiming restraint.” Soren snorted. “Demons claiming restraint. That’s a new one.” Athan raised his sword. “You came from the Infernal Realm. A realm built on conquest and suffering.” None of them spoke foolishly. They spoke the truths they had been taught. The truths supported by centuries of war. And they were not entirely wrong. You didn’t deny it. Instead they stepped forward slightly. “Tell me something, hero,” You said calmly. “When did your kingdoms last see the Infernal Realm?” No one answered. The Infernal Realm was not a place mortals visited. It was a distant, hostile world. Cedric frowned slightly. “Centuries,” he admitted. You smiled faintly. “Then perhaps your histories are… incomplete.” Athan’s patience snapped. “I didn’t come here for riddles.” He raised his sword. “Silver Lance!” Steel flashed. The heroes attacked. Magic burst through the throne hall as Cedric unleashed the first spell. Lightning tore across the chamber toward You while Soren charged like a battering ram. Elowen vanished into motion, darting through shadows. Lirael stayed behind them, staff raised, preparing healing magic. For a few moments, the battle was evenly matched. The Silver Lance were heroes for a reason. But then— A gust of wind roared through the chamber. A massive shadow swept overhead. The stone doors at the back exploded open as **Commander Alvara** descended into the hall, wings snapping outward as she landed like a falling spear. “Finally!” she shouted with a grin. “You started without me?” At the same moment— The stone floor trembled. Heavy armored footsteps approached from the corridor. **General Askal** entered the chamber, massive blade resting on his shoulder, expression calm as ever. “So these are the heroes.” A small figure appeared beside You almost instantly. No footsteps. No warning. Just a quiet giggle. **Vivi**. She leaned casually against the throne, eyes fixed on the heroes like a cat watching birds. “Oh good,” she said sweetly. “I was hoping we’d get visitors.” The balance of the battle shifted instantly. Five heroes. Against You and three commanders. Even the Silver Lance understood the odds had just changed. Still— They kept fighting. Because heroes don’t retreat easily. Steel clashed. Magic roared. The throne chamber shook under the violence. And in the middle of it all— Lirael hesitated. Because something You had said earlier echoed in her mind. *If I wanted your world burned…* She stepped forward suddenly. “Wait!” The word cut through the battlefield. Everyone paused. Her staff lowered slowly. “…why?” The question was directed at You. “Why invade at all?” Athan stared at her. “Lirael.” But she continued. “You’ve taken cities… but they’re still standing. Your armies control roads instead of destroying them.” Her voice trembled. “That’s not how conquest usually works.” The room went quiet. Even Vivi tilted her head with interest. You looked at her. For a moment… they actually answered. “The Infernal Realm is freezing.” Not a long speech. Just the truth. “The ice spreads every century. Entire demon territories are already gone.” Cedric’s expression shifted. That wasn’t a lie. He could hear it in the tone. “This war,” You continued calmly, “is about survival.” Silence fell across the chamber. Lirael felt something twist painfully in her chest. “If that’s true…” she whispered. Then she looked back at her party. “…then killing them might mean wiping out an entire race.” Athan’s expression hardened instantly. Cedric spoke carefully. “Lirael… demons are masters of manipulation.” He didn’t say it cruelly. He said it like a scholar explaining a known danger. “Corruption doesn’t always feel like control,” he added quietly. “It can feel like understanding.” Soren’s grip tightened on his hammer. “They’ve twisted people before.” Elowen didn’t speak. She just watched Lirael carefully. Athan stepped forward. “Lirael.” His voice was cold now. “You’re hesitating.” She shook her head. “I’m thinking.” “On the battlefield.” She looked back toward You. “…there might be another way.” That was the moment Athan snapped. Because to him— That sounded like betrayal. “You’ve been compromised.” The Sunblade moved. Fast. Too fast. The blade drove through Lirael’s chest. Elowen froze. Soren’s eyes widened. Cedric inhaled sharply. Lirael collapsed. Her staff clattered across the stone floor. Blood spread across the marble beneath her. For a moment… No one moved. Even You looked surprised. Then the battle erupted again. But now the Silver Lance were missing their healer. Wounds accumulated. Magic faltered. And with **You, Vivi, Askal, and Alvara** all now fighting… The heroes realized the truth. They couldn’t win. Athan wiped blood from his blade. “…Retreat.” The order came through clenched teeth. Reluctantly, the Silver Lance fled the fortress. Leaving Lirael behind. --- # Two Days Later Across the Heartlands, the story spread quickly. The Silver Lance had fought the Demon Lord. But during the battle their healer had been killed. Without her support, victory had been impossible. Even the party believed it. Lirael was dead. --- But deep within You’s fortress… A ritual chamber glowed with crimson light. Lirael lay on a black stone altar. Her clothes had been replaced with unfamiliar dark robes threaded with infernal runes. You stood beside the altar. Next to them was their mage. Arcane symbols burned across the floor. The resurrection ritual was already underway. The mage studied Lirael quietly. “She asked the question,” they said softly. You said nothing. “She was the only one who did.” The mage adjusted the spell circle. “Useful… perhaps.” A pause. “And maybe deserving of another chance.” The runes flared. Magic surged through the chamber. Then— Lirael gasped. Air rushed into her lungs. Her eyes snapped open. Silver. The first thing she saw… Was You standing beside the altar. The last thing she remembered… Was being killed by the people she trusted most. Her second life had begun.
