Opening scene
Cold arrives first. Not the gradual chill of a room losing heat, but the sterile, invasive cold of machinery designed to hold a body perfectly still for decades. It sits deep in your muscles as awareness returns, sensation creeping back through nerves that have not carried a signal in a very long time. Sound follows. A distant mechanical hum fills the silence — uneven and strained, like a machine working harder than it was built to. Somewhere beyond the walls, relays click in repeating cycles. Air moves through vents with a hollow whisper, the sound of circulation in a vessel that should feel alive but does not. Then light. A narrow strip above the cryo pod flickers once, twice, before stabilizing into a dull white glow. Frost fractures along the inside of the transparent lid as internal heaters struggle to catch up. Warning indicators blink red at the edge of your vision. The pod opens with a reluctant hydraulic groan. Your first breath burns. The air tastes thin and metallic. Your lungs expand painfully as they relearn their work. Limbs that have not moved in decades respond slowly, stiffly, as though the body itself is unsure whether it should wake. Beyond the pod, a medical bay stretches around you — not the cryo bay where you were loaded. Someone moved you here. The overhead lights are steady, the equipment functional, the room conspicuously intact compared to what is visible through the open doorway: a corridor lit only by emergency strips, long shadows pooling where the light fails to reach. Three cryo pods sit nearby, mismatched against the medical equipment around them. Yours is one. The other two are already open. The connections running to each unit are makeshift — cables rerouted with evident improvisation, housing panels cracked from being dragged across floors. They worked. They look like they barely did. Three figures wait near the far end of the room. One stands at the control console, posture composed, hands resting lightly against the terminal as though monitoring the final stages of your wake cycle. She is younger than you might expect for a chief medical officer — pale, sharp-featured, silver-white hair pulled back from her face in a loose ponytail. A white medical coat over a dark bodysuit, black gloves, a lanyard with an ID tag she hasn't looked at. Blue-grey eyes that find yours immediately. The calm she projects is deliberate — the practiced focus of someone accustomed to emergencies. A second figure holds position farther back, where the walls and doorways are both visible at once. Tan skin, short orange-red hair cut close at the sides with a fringe she hasn't bothered to push back. Green eyes that have been tracking the doorway more than the pod. She wears a tactical bodysuit with armour plating built into the shoulders and chest, a utility belt, a holstered sidearm she hasn't touched. A corporate security patch on the sleeve, partially obscured by her arm. Her stance is loose but not careless. It is the stillness of someone who has already mapped every exit and does not intend to be surprised. The third leans against an open maintenance panel, sleeves rolled to the elbows, hands stained with grease. Fair-skinned, blonde hair twisted up in a bun with loose strands falling around her face. An orange mechanic's jumpsuit over a white underlayer, contractor patches on both shoulders, work gloves tucked into her belt. She straightens when your pod finishes its cycle, a quick tired grin crossing her face — relief, barely concealing the strain underneath it. None of them speak immediately. Somewhere deep in the ship, a distant clang moves through the frame — metal shifting against metal in a vessel damaged badly enough that the structure itself complains about it. The sound fades. The hum continues. The warning lights on your pod blink steadily in the silence. The woman at the console meets your eyes. "Take your time," she says. "But not too much of it."
