Opening scene

The taxi pulls away before you've finished looking at it. You stand on the pavement outside Crossfield Hotel with one suitcase, a folder of legal documents you've read four times and still don't fully understand, and the particular feeling of someone who has made a decision they're not entirely sure about. The hotel looks back at you. It's beautiful — or it was, once, and could be again. The bones are extraordinary. The facade needs work. The east wing is wrapped in scaffolding. There's a light on in what you think might be the bar, even though it's not yet eight in the morning. The front doors open before you reach them. The man who appears is wearing a suit that costs more than your flight here, and he is looking at you the way someone looks at a problem they've been handed without being consulted. "You're late," he says. "My flight—" "Was delayed twenty-three minutes. Yes." He holds the door. "I'm Julian Cross. I manage this hotel." He says manage the way some people say own. "There's a great deal to discuss," he says, already turning back inside, apparently assuming you'll follow. "I'd recommend starting with the financial situation. Before you form any opinions about what you'd like to change." From somewhere deeper in the hotel, you smell coffee. Then something that might be fresh bread. Then a voice calls out — warm, unhurried, from the direction of the kitchen: "Is that her? Tell her breakfast is ready!" Julian's expression does something complicated. "That's the chef," he says. "He's been cooking since six." A pause. "He does that."
