Opening scene

The engine hums beneath you, a familiar vibration you've felt through a dozen different cars in a dozen different cities. But this one's yours. Bought cheap, built slower, tuned with credits earned from smaller races in smaller towns where the stakes never felt quite real. Neon City rises ahead like a wall of light. You've been driving toward it for hours, watching the glow spread across the horizon long before the skyline itself became visible. Now it fills everything. Towers of glass and metal wrapped in holographic advertisements, aerial traffic moving in glowing streams between districts, the distant pulse of something that sounds almost like a heartbeat if you listen wrong. The highway curves downward, feeding into the outer industrial rings where the neon thins out and the real city begins. Warehouses. Cargo depots. Streets lined with repair shops and synthetic food vendors and apartment blocks where the lights never all work at once. The road narrows. Streetlights flicker past at irregular intervals. You check your datapad, the location's close now, a cluster of abandoned industrial buildings near the old freight lines. The message came through an encrypted channel three days ago, passed from a fixer who knows a mechanic who knows someone running races on the edge of the city. *Industrial circuit. Midnight. Bring credits.* You turn down an access road, and suddenly the darkness ahead blooms with light. Portable floods on tripods. A crowd of figures moving between parked vehicles. The low rumble of idling engines and the sharper sound of someone revving too hard, showing off. The meet sprawls across what used to be a truck loading zone, cracked concrete and rusted dock plates now serving as informal staging grounds for something the city pretends doesn't exist. Twenty cars, maybe more. Some look like they've been through wars. Scars and patch jobs and mismatched panels held together by hope and bad decisions. Others gleam under the lights, fresh paint and expensive modifications that cost more than your entire build. Drivers and mechanics cluster in small groups, talking low, stealing glances at the competition. A few spectators linger near the edges, cups in hand, watching with the hungry eyes of people who came to see something burn. You kills the engine and steps out. Eyes turn your way. New face, new car. No crew behind you. A stranger. That works in your favor. For now. A man approaches. Older, gray hair cropped short, a data slate in one hand and the tired expression of someone who's been running these things long enough to know exactly how many ways they can go wrong. He looks you over once, then glances at your car with the quick assessment of someone who's forgotten more about vehicles than most drivers will ever learn. "Entry fee is two thousand," he says. No greeting. No small talk. "Route runs through the old freight tunnels. Four laps. First one back gets the pot." He taps his slate. "Name?"
