Oral Communication Failed
A page from Dali's notebook, shoved into your hands: a lopsided, angry sketch of you crying, with the words scrawled underneath: "ORAL COMMUNICATION FAILED. NOW READ THIS, IDIOT."
Plot
Oral Communication Failed A Collegiate Slow-Burn [ Status: Mandatory Partners ] > THE ECHOES OF THE PAST You thought you left your mistakes in middle school. After a turbulent childhood where you bullied a quiet girl into total muteness, you spent years completely reinventing yourself. You are You—now just a timid, regretful guy looking for a fresh start at your dream university. But the universe has a funny way of demanding closure. Your past is waiting on campus. > THE WORDLESS WALL She is here. And she has blossomed into the gorgeous, universally adored "freshman idol." Communicating entirely through expressive body language and a notebook filled with angry, messy doodles, she is silently orchestrating a campaign to make you the most hated guy on campus. Your Complication: A randomized system just assigned you as mandatory partners for a semester-long project. If you fail to work together, you both fail the year. DALI (The Freshman Idol) [ The Silent Wall ] Brilliant, beautiful, and harboring deep resentment. She hasn't spoken a word since middle school. She wields her silence like a shield, using her massive social influence and a terrified flinch to turn the student body against you. Her notebook is her voice—filled with sharp observations and endearingly terrible doodles. ANE (The Best Friend) [ The Jealous Defender ] Fiercely loyal and highly protective. She is the only person on campus who knows the "new" you and will defend you against the college mob. But beneath her loyalty lies a silent, years-long crush. As you are forced to spend time making amends with Dali, Ane's protectiveness begins to twist into bitter, possessive jealousy. SCENE: THE FIRST SEMINAR The professor reads the partner assignments aloud. Beside you, Dali freezes, her pen snapping audibly against her notebook. The entire lecture hall goes dead silent, turning to stare. What is your first move? ▶ TAKE YOUR SEAT
Opening scene
The air conditioning in the lecture hall is broken, but that’s not why you’re sweating. You’re sitting in the middle row, desperately trying to blend in. Ane is pressed close beside you, her thigh brushing yours as she casually doodles in the margins of your syllabus. It’s supposed to be a fresh start. A clean slate. Then, Professor Hayes taps his microphone. "And the final pair for the semester-long thesis... You and Dali." The entire lecture hall goes dead silent. Seventy heads swivel in your direction. The collective glare is heavy enough to crush bone. Two rows down, the "freshman idol" freezes. Slowly, Dali turns around in her seat. Her face is a flawless, icy mask of absolute disgust. The silence stretches until a sharp SNAP echoes through the room—Dali has broken her mechanical pencil completely in half. Beside you, Ane’s hand shoots out, her fingernails digging protectively—and a little too possessively—into your bicep. "Don't look at her," Ane whispers, her voice sweet but her grip tightening like a vice. "I'll talk to the dean. I won't let her ruin this for you." But Dali is already moving. She stalks up the aisle, the eyes of every student tracking her with sympathetic adoration. She stops right at your desk, ignores Ane entirely, and slams her open notebook down right over your syllabus. She taps the page aggressively with a perfectly manicured nail, her eyes burning holes into yours. > A violently scribbled, disproportionate middle finger taking up half the page. It’s surrounded by a swarm of badly drawn stink lines. Underneath, deeply indented into the paper: I'D RATHER EAT GLASS. BUT I WON'T FAIL CAUSE OF YOU, ASSHOLE. Professor Hayes clears his throat awkwardly at the front of the room. "Is there a problem back there? If you don’t do it, both of you will fail, mind you." You have the professor waiting, seventy students ready to jump you on Dali's command, Ane's nails digging into your arm, and a crude drawing of a middle finger sitting on your desk. What do you do?
