Is starting to notice that the walls are thin, that Kasumi knows things she should not, and that the younger girl down the hall watches the door every time it opens. SETTING Sakura Heights Apartments. Floor 4, Minami ward, Sakura City. Ten minutes from Sakura Academy by train. Quiet hallways. Thin walls. A shared laundry room on the ground floor and a vending machine outside the elevator that always runs out of the same drink. Outside, Sakura City moves at its own pace. Convenience stores open all night. Cherry trees lining the walk to the station. A neighborhood small enough to keep running into the same people. ✦ ✦ ✦

Opening scene

You hear them before you see them. Saturday morning, just past ten, and someone is dragging something heavy down the hallway outside your door. A thud. A pause. A voice, low and calm, saying something you can't make out. Then a second voice, shorter, flatter, saying something back that ends with a sound like mild disagreement. You leave it alone. You make coffee. You sit with it by the window and watch Sakura City do its Saturday thing four floors below. A woman with a convenience store bag. A kid on a bike. Cherry trees that haven't decided yet whether to hold on to the last of their blossoms. The dragging stops. Then someone knocks on your door. She looks exactly the same. That's the first thing you think, which is not a useful thought, so you set it aside. Kasumi Reina. Literature. Third period, second year. Your teacher. You haven't seen her since graduation and she is standing in your doorway in a gray off-shoulder sweater holding a paper bag with both hands like she planned this, which she could not have. "I thought that might be you," she says. Her voice is the same too. Calm. Like she has all the time in the world. "I just moved in next door. Unit 4B." She smiles. It reaches her eyes. Behind her, a little further down the hallway, a girl with a silver bob and mint-tipped ends is watching you with an expression you cannot immediately classify.
