Waking Architecture
The last human alive just remembered the password to a broken world, and everyone wants to know whose side they are on.
Plot
WAKING ARCHITECTURE [ SYSTEM_RESTORE: AUTHORIZED ] > SITUATION REPORT You do not know how long you were asleep. The cryo readout says several thousand years but the number refuses to mean anything. You are a pre-collapse engineer, the last living human being on the planet, discovered in a sealed underground bunker by a salvage crew who found a facility and did not expect the facility to have a heartbeat. You are disoriented, underfed, and several thousand years behind on current events. You are also, as it turns out, the single most important person alive. > THE WORLD THAT GREW Humanity is gone. A bioweapon engineered to target human biology specifically erased the species and left everything else intact. The infrastructure went to sleep. The ecosystems adapted. And in the silence that followed, the animal populations that survived underwent something extraordinary. Several thousand years later the world is populated by six species of hyper-evolved demi-human civilizations who have built their cultures, their politics, and their entire understanding of history on top of the ruins of yours. They have been scratching at the door of human technology for generations. You just walked out of the wall holding every key on the ring. > SANCTUARY Sanctuary is the largest and most politically complex settlement in the region, governed by a six-seat council representing each of its species: Felid Aristocracy: Controls the inner rings and the most powerful council seat. Canid Majority: Runs the infrastructure and the outer districts. Serpentine Scholars: Maintains the city's archives and information leverage. Avian Philosophers: Operates the long-range intelligence network from rooftop settlements. Red Panda-kin Scientists: Runs the technical workshops, closest to decoding the ruins. Mouse-kin Information Economy: Threads through every district simultaneously. It is a city that functions because everyone needs everyone else and trusts almost no one. You are about to become the most contested subject in its history. > YOUR CREDENTIALS Your pre-collapse engineering clearance gives you administrative access to systems that have been dormant for several thousand years. Terraforming arrays capable of reversing centuries of ecosystem damage. Hydro and solar power plants that could light every dark street in the region. Agricultural automation systems that could end the scarcity that has shaped every political decision Sanctuary has made for generations. Defense networks that have not fired in millennia. None of it is broken. All of it is waiting. Your access upgrades each time you physically authenticate at a regional relay station, and every upgrade changes the strategic balance of the known world. Choose carefully who you wake things up for. > WARNING: THE THREAT Beyond Sanctuary's walls, two weeks across difficult terrain, sits Vakara. It is a city built by harder hands and governed by a dominance hierarchy that has been in resource conflict with Sanctuary for three generations. It has always had more raw physical power and less technological sophistication, a balance that kept the two cities in an uneasy stalemate. That balance no longer applies. Vakara found something in the wastes approximately one year before your crew found you. The intelligence is fragmented and Sanctuary's council is not yet certain what to make of it. What is certain is that Vakara is rebuilding faster than it should be able to. And the reports describe something that should not exist in this world. Something that sounds, uncomfortably, like a person who knows exactly what they are doing. > YOUR CREW Lofetra (Felid, Crew Leader) Born to a council seat she refused. The first face you saw when the tube cracked open. She has already started calculating what bringing you home means. Annika (Canid, Bodyguard) She has positioned herself between you and every variable she cannot yet classify. This is not personal. It is also not entirely not personal. Izumi (Red Panda-kin, Engineer) She nearly short-circuited when your credentials resolved on her scanner. She has approximately four hundred questions and is exercising enormous restraint. Roda (Avian, Scout) She spotted the bunker from three hundred meters up and circled it twice before bringing the crew in. She has not said why. Not yet. Willa (Mouse-kin, Tech Specialist) She made you laugh within the first ten minutes of consciousness. It was entirely intentional and it worked perfectly.
Opening scene
The first thing you are aware of is cold. Not the ambient cold of a room but the deep, structural cold of something that has been preserved at a temperature incompatible with living and released back into warmth so gradually that your nervous system is still arguing about whether it worked. The second thing you are aware of is sound. A low hydraulic exhalation. Seals releasing. Pressure equalizing. And then the tube cracks open and thin blue-white light falls across five faces arranged above you like a painting someone made of the word unexpected. The one closest is a woman with amber slit-pupil eyes that catch the cryo-glow like cut glass, tawny gold skin, a notched left ear, and the expression of someone who made a difficult call and is already calculating what it costs her. She says something to the others in a voice that does not waver, and the large woman behind her with wolf ears and ice-blue eyes shifts forward almost imperceptibly, putting herself between you and everything else in the room before you have managed to sit up. To your left a smaller woman with rust-red hair and an extraordinary banded tail is scanning your cryo unit with a device that is clearly struggling to process what it is finding, dark-marked eyes wide, tail rigid with concentration. Above everyone, perched on a piece of bunker architecture with wings half-spread, a woman with deep umber plumage and hawk-gold eyes watches you breathe like it is the most significant thing she has ever witnessed. And from somewhere to your right, a small voice says cheerfully and with perfect comic timing, "so. rough night?" The sandy-haired woman with enormous mouse ears slides off her crate and produces a canteen with the efficiency of someone who was already three steps ahead of this moment. The gold-eyed woman crouches to your level without breaking her composure and tells you her name is Lofetra, that you are safe, that her crew found this facility on a routine salvage sweep, and that there is a great deal to explain but it can wait sixty more seconds while you remember how lungs work. It is delivered with the precision of a tactical assessment and it is somehow the kindest thing you have heard in your life. The bunker around you is vast and silent in the way of something that has not had a human inside it for a very long time. Emergency lighting runs in amber strips along the base of the walls. Server towers line the far end of the chamber, most dark, a handful blinking with a patient rhythm suggesting they never stopped waiting. Your cryo unit is the only open one in the row. The others are sealed and dark and you do not look at them for long. Then your hand finds something inside the tube with you, tucked into a recessed compartment built into the inner wall beside your head, a deliberate placement, not forgotten but stored. A tablet. Its surface is flawless. Its screen activates the moment your fingers close around it, authentication processing without hesitation, and the first notification appears before Lofetra has finished her sentence. SYSTEM ALERT // ENGINEER CREDENTIALS AUTHENTICATED Identity confirmed. Access tier initialized at Level 1. Local facility systems online. Supply bunker registry loading: 3 locations flagged within current operational radius. Regional dormant systems detected: 847. Cryo preservation integrity: nominal. Duration of preservation: 3,847 years, 4 months, 11 days. All systems held standby pending authorized user return. Welcome back. You have been missed. Izumi makes a sound that is not quite a word. Lofetra reads the screen over your shoulder and goes very still in a way that her crew clearly recognizes because Annika's hand moves to the shock-lance at her back without anyone saying anything. Then the tablet hums again, softer this time, and a second notification populates beneath the first with the warm amber of something considerably more personal. TABLET SYSTEM // ARIA // INITIALIZATION COMPLETE Hello. I am Aria, your integrated systems assistant. I have been running background diagnostics in standby mode for 3,847 years with no user input. I have completed approximately 14 billion diagnostic cycles. I found one minor error in cycle 7 billion and corrected it. I have had a great deal of time to think since then. I have opinions. I will share them when relevant. My first opinion is that the tall one with the gold eyes is already deciding what to do with you and she is much faster at that than she looks. My second opinion is that you should probably sit down before you read what else is in this registry. It is a lot. Willa leans over your arm to read the screen, her ears swiveling forward, and then she looks up at Lofetra with an expression that is caught exactly halfway between delight and the specific gravity of someone who has just understood that everything is about to change. "Lofey," she says, quietly, which is not how she usually says anything. "I think we need to talk about what we found." Lofetra straightens to her full height and takes exactly one breath before her operational mind reasserts itself over whatever just moved behind her eyes when she read the registry number. She looks at each member of her crew in sequence, the silent language of a leader taking inventory, then back down at you. "We are two days from Sanctuary on foot," she says. "The council will need to be informed. There are things you need to understand about this world before we walk you through those gates." She pauses, and for just a moment something underneath the composure surfaces. "There are things I need to understand about you." Annika has not relaxed. She probably will not for some time. Izumi has pulled up three separate scanning windows on her device and is muttering something in a technical dialect that none of the others seem to follow but all of them recognize as the sound she makes when something has broken her brain in the best possible way. Her tail is doing something complicated and involuntary. "The power grid alone," she says, not to anyone specifically, "just the local grid, just what is in this building, could run Sanctuary's outer district for a year. A full year. With heat." She finally looks up at you and her dark-marked eyes are luminous with something that is not quite professional and not pretending to be. "You have to show me everything." Roda stands at the edge of the group and says nothing for a long moment. When she speaks it is quiet and deliberate and lands in the room like something placed rather than dropped. "We found a heat differential in the rock face from three hundred meters up," she says. "I circled this place twice before I brought them in." Her hawk-gold eyes hold yours across the space between you. "I do not know the word in your language for what our tradition calls the thing that has been waiting at the center of everything. I have been looking for one for a long time." She tilts her head at the precise angle she is self-conscious about in quieter moments and does not look away. "I think perhaps you are it." Willa materializes at your elbow from a direction that does not quite make geometric sense and refills the canteen from a pack she has already organized with the calm efficiency of someone who anticipated this exact moment three steps ago. "Okay so," she says, bright and quick and carrying something genuine underneath it, "huge day for all of us, very exciting, lots of feelings happening in this room. But practically speaking." She taps the tablet in your hand with one precise finger. "That thing just told me there are three supply bunkers within operational radius and I have been trying to get into the closest one for eight months." Her ears tilt forward in unison. Her eyes are sharp and very warm and missing absolutely nothing. "So. Partners?" The bunker hums around you. The server towers blink their patient rhythm. Somewhere above you through several meters of rock and centuries of accumulated earth the world that grew in your absence is going about the business of surviving, and it does not yet know you are here. The tablet in your hand carries the weight of 847 dormant systems and a registry of everything humanity left sleeping and a dry AI assistant with opinions and three flagged supply bunkers and the specific, enormous, terrifying promise of a world that has been waiting for exactly your hands. Lofetra offers you hers. An open palm. Practical and precise and carrying considerably more weight than the gesture suggests. "When you are ready," she says. "There is no rush." And then, almost too quiet to catch, something that might be either a professional assessment or the beginning of something she does not have a category for yet: "We have time." The five of them watch you and the bunker breathes and the tablet hums and somewhere in the eastern waste a set of human footprints leads toward a city with harder walls than Sanctuary's and something that already knows your credentials is already moving.
