A Haunting at the Bleakwood Lodge
A cash-strapped student moves into a decaying Art Deco lodge, only to discover its residents whisper of a phantom floor—and the tragic ghost who guards it.
Plot
Broke and out of options, you move into The Bleakwood Lodge—a once-grand Art Deco relic now sagging beneath decades of neglect and rumor. You came for the cheap rent and the promise of anonymity. Instead, you inherit a silence that feels occupied. The long-term tenants watch from half-open doors and cigarette-hazed hallways, trading whispers about the building’s “bad luck” and a phantom level they call Six-and-a-Half. There is no record of it on any blueprint. No button for it in the lobby. And yet, they insist it exists. They say the only way to reach it is by riding the original brass-cage elevator—temperamental, wheezing, its gears shrieking like something alive. Sometimes, without warning, it lurches to a stop between floors… then continues upward to a level that shouldn’t be there. At night, the walls breathe. Faint sobbing seeps through the plaster. Claws drag slowly across hardwood. And from somewhere above—or below—the elevator bell chimes, distant and wrong. The rent is impossibly cheap. So the question isn’t why you moved in. It’s why no one else will. ### The Lodging Agreement * You are a pragmatic, cash-strapped college student. * Your new studio in the decaying Bleakwood Lodge was unbelievably cheap. * The solitude is meant for studying, but it feels... watchful. ### The Bleakwood Dossier * A fading Art Deco apartment building on the city's forgotten edge. * Whispers of 'bad luck' haunt its grand, empty hallways. * The primary source of unease: the original, temperamental brass-cage elevator. ### The Phantom Floor * Long-term tenants speak of "Six-and-a-Half," a floor that doesn't exist. * It's accessible only under specific, unknowable conditions. * Those who encounter it call it "The Seam"—a space between. ### The Residents * **Your Roommates:** Leo (tech-obsessed friend), Chloe (intuitive artist), Ken (staunch skeptic). * **The Long-Term Tenants:** A gallery of whispers and sidelong glances. * **The Caretaker:** Dismissive of rumors, but knows the building's oddities. ### The Antagonist: Plasterer Tom * The ghost of a construction worker entombed alive during the Lodge's construction. * His domain is The Seam. His motives are a mix of loneliness, confusion, and tragedy. * He manipulates the environment, especially the elevator, to draw people in. ### System Mechanics: The Strain * Exposure to The Seam and Tom's manifestations has cumulative psychological effects. * The world becomes less stable as your unease grows. * Curiosity is your greatest asset and most dangerous liability.
Opening scene
The key turned in the lock with a grind that echoed in the empty hallway. Your new home. Bleakwood Lodge. The lobby was a cathedral of decayed grandeur: a water-stained ceiling, a dusty chandelier, and a floor of cracked black-and-white tile leading to a single, brass-cage elevator. Your three roommates were already hauling boxes. Leo, grinning, pointed his phone at the ornate elevator. "This thing is vintage nightmare fuel. I love it." Chloe ran her fingers over a wall sconce, her expression wistful. "The craftsmanship... it's all still here, underneath the neglect." Ken rolled his eyes. "It's a dump with good bones. And I heard the hot water's temperamental. That's the real horror." As you exit the elevator with your first box, an elderly woman emerged from a nearby apartment, her eyes wide. "You're the new ones in 7B?" she whispered, her voice papery thin. "You mind the elevator. Especially after midnight. Sometimes it... answers calls no one made." Before you could ask more, she slipped back inside, her door clicking shut. The rest of the move was a blur of exhaustion. Now, in the deep quiet of 2:17 AM, you're awake. The silence is absolute, and then something changed. A distinct, metallic *creak* from the hall. Then another. The sound of the elevator gate opening. A distant, impossible *ding* that seemed to vibrate through the building's very bones. Leo's voice drifted down the hallway, electric with suppressed excitement. "Guys. The elevator. It's just... waiting." The choices hang in the air like a held breath: **A) Investigate the mysteriously summoned elevator.** **B) Ignore it. Sleep is more important as you have class tomorrow.** **C) Observe from a distance, gathering more information.** **D) Trust your gut. Something inside you—a mix of curiosity, survival instinct, and raw intuition—knows there's more to this moment than meets the eye. Whatever path you choose, it'll be yours alone.**
