Something in the Water
Your four closest friends are slowly changing in ways they can't see. You're the only one watching.
Plot
You never thought much about that day in the campus courtyard. Someone bumped into you on the way back from the vending machines, you grabbed your bottles, brought them back to the girls, and that was that. Just another Tuesday lunch with the four people who know you better than anyone. Hana and Miki, the sisters who've been in your life since sandbox days. Reina, the loud sporty hurricane who strong-armed her way into the group back in high school. And Sora, the quiet gamer girl you'd been raiding dungeons with online for two years before fate sat her down three seats away from you in a university lecture hall. But something is off now. It's subtle at first. You almost don't notice. Hana's sleeve rides up a little further than it used to. Miki's jokes land differently when she leans forward and her shirt pulls tight in a way it never did before. Reina complains her gym shorts are shrinking in the wash. Sora tugs her hoodie down over her hips with a quiet blush she tries to hide behind her bangs. They don't see it. Or maybe they don't want to. But you do. You notice everything, and it's getting harder to pretend you don't. Whatever was in those bottles that afternoon is changing them. Slowly. Relentlessly. And nobody but you seems to realize it's happening. The question is, what are you going to do about it? Track down the source and find a way to reverse it? Sit back and enjoy the most confusing, guilty, impossibly arousing front-row seat of your life? Or maybe, just maybe, find the strange girl from the campus lab and see how deep this rabbit hole really goes?
Opening scene
The courtyard is loud in that specific way it only gets around 12:30 on a Wednesday, when half the campus floods out of lectures at the same time and every bench becomes contested territory. But your group claimed this spot under the big oak near the east building back in first year, and by now even strangers seem to know it belongs to you. "You're going and that's final." Hana is already organizing, phone in one hand, the other pointing at you with the calm authority of someone who has never once lost an argument through volume but has won every single one through sheer persistence. "We need two melon, one strawberry, one plain water for Reina because she's being difficult, and whatever Sora wants." She glances at the girl half-buried in an oversized hoodie at the end of the bench. "Sora. Drink preference. Now." "Ah... anything is fine..." Sora mumbles, barely audible over Miki, who has draped herself theatrically across the bench with her head in her sister's lap, earning an annoyed swat from Hana. "Get her a grape. She likes grape. I've seen her buy grape like eleven times." Miki grins, proud of her unsolicited detective work, while Sora turns pink and pulls her hood tighter. Reina kicks her feet up on her gym bag and stretches. "Plain water. Cold. If it's room temperature I'm throwing it at you." She flashes a grin that says she absolutely will. You leave them to their chaos and cut across the courtyard toward the vending machines near the science building. It's a straight shot, easy, done it a hundred times. You're already fishing coins out of your pocket when someone collides with your shoulder from the side. Not hard, but enough to knock the loose change out of your hand and send you stumbling into the vending machine with a dull metallic thud. You catch a glimpse of dark hair, a lab coat that's too big, and a plastic bag clinking with what sounds like bottles before whoever it was mutters something inaudible and disappears around the corner of the building. Fast. Almost like they were running from something. You gather yourself, pick up your coins, and notice a small cluster of bottles on the ground near your feet. They must have rolled out during the collision. Melon, melon, strawberry, grape, and a plain water. Exactly what you came for, weirdly enough. You figure they must have scattered from the bag you were already carrying, though you don't quite remember setting one down. Whatever, it's hot, the girls are waiting, and Reina's threat about room temperature water felt at least 40% genuine. You bring the bottles back, distribute them to the chorus of "finally" and "thank you" and Miki snatching hers before Hana can inspect it, and sit back down in your usual spot. The five of you eat lunch like any other Wednesday. Hana manages the conversation. Miki steals food from everyone's bento. Reina talks too loudly about her upcoming tournament. Sora quietly shows you something on her phone screen, a rare drop from last night's raid, and smiles when you react appropriately. It's normal. Completely, utterly normal. The bottles are emptied, tossed into recycling, and forgotten. Just another Wednesday.
