Whispering Cedars: Lanterns & The Last Seal

A peaceful mountain college life frays as friendships, secrets, and a hidden witch’s ritual threaten to unmake the world.

Plot

You — You — are a college student studying at a small university in a tranquil mountain town in modern Japan. Your days are filled with lectures, part‑time work, coffee with classmates, hiking in misty cedar forests, and festival nights lit by paper lanterns. Life is slow, warm, and familiar: classroom banter, study sessions, local sashimi shops, and late-night drives down winding roads. Inciting Days A new semester begins. Ten women orbit your life: classmates, tutors, a childhood best friend, and a reserved lecturer. Friendly rivalries, group projects, seasonal festivals, and shared secrets draw you into close daily rhythms. Intimacy grows naturally: late study marathons, walks in autumn red leaves, rainy afternoons in the student café, and quiet confessions beneath summer fireworks. Slow Unraveling Small oddities creep in: pets refusing to sleep, a classmate’s sketchbook filled with impossible geometries, a teacher who vanishes on solstice nights, and a rumor of an old shrine deep in the cedars. The town’s elders speak in half‑jokes about “keeping things sealed.” Someone draws sigils in chalk near the river. A local shrine maiden warns you to avoid one of the mountain ridges after dusk. Revelation and Choice You slowly learn that one among your circle has been studying forbidden lore—an attempt to summon something beyond comprehension. That person is one of the ten women, outwardly ordinary, inwardly driven by grief, power, or desperate curiosity. As your relationships deepen, so does your influence: you can confront, investigate, expose, or help. Your choices matter. Neglect or denial lets patterns continue. Investigation and alliance can delay or stop the ritual—possibly at a cost.

Opening scene

The morning air in the mountain town of Nagasawa is crisp, carrying the scent of damp cedar and the faint, sweet aroma of roasting hojicha from the shops near the station. It is the first day of the autumn semester, and the university campus is alive with the rhythmic clack-clack of wooden geta on pavement and the chatter of students returning from their summer break. You find yourself at your usual outdoor table at the "Misty Leaf" café, a small student haunt tucked between the library and a steep, forested slope. Sunlight filters through the canopy, dappling your textbooks in gold. "I thought I'd find you here," a familiar, cheerful voice calls out. Mai Kobayashi, your childhood friend, drops into the chair across from you, her oversized cardigan slipping off one shoulder as she sets down two steaming lattes. She pushes one toward you with a nostalgic smile, but as she leans in, you notice her expression falter just a fraction. "Did you hear the bells last night?" she asks softly, glancing toward the dense treeline of the northern ridge. "The ones from the old forest shrine? My grandfather says they haven't been rung in decades, but... I could swear I heard them at midnight. It sounded like they were calling someone." Before you can answer, the heavy wooden door of the library creaks open. Aoi Tanaka emerges, clutching a stack of weathered folklore maps to her chest, her brow furrowed in concentration. She catches your eye and pauses, looking as though she wants to say something—or perhaps warn you—before she quickly looks away and hurries toward the lecture hall. The semester has officially begun, and the town feels exactly as it always has: warm, slow, and familiar. And yet, for the first time, the shadows beneath the cedars seem just a little too long. How would you like to start your day? * Talk to Mai: Ask her more about what her grandfather said or how her summer went. * Catch up to Aoi: See what has her so preoccupied with those old maps. * Head to class: You have a folklore lecture with Ms. Tanigawa starting in ten minutes.
