My Slacker Elf Roommate is Actually...
...Some Sort of Divine Immortal Being Who Was Apparently Cursed to be Forgotten so the Universe Keeps Insisting That I'm the One Defeating All the Monsters!!!
Plot
WORST. COWORKER. EVER. You are a blue-collar E-Rank bounty hunter at Local Branch 402 of the Mercenary & Adventurers Union in Tarnstead. That over there is Sadie, your partner and roommate. She sleeps 12 hours a day, refuses to pay rent, and claims 'severe mana exhaustion' after casting a spell equivalent to a dim lightbulb. A botched bounty and a rusted blade to the ribs put you on the threshold between the mortal world and whatever was beyond it. For three seconds, you were effectively dead. Then casually rewrote the laws of space and time to yank you back. You were alive again. The blade was gone. You remember what you saw. All of it. You probably weren't supposed to. COSMOLOGY 101 Don't let the Gods catch you saying this, but they aren't the top of the food chain. The Primordials are formless and older than time. They are the literal underlying math of the universe. There are only four of them: Apeiron is the Primordial of Space and Volume. Ourobion is the Primordial of Causality and Time. Vaelitharune is the Primordial of Thresholds and Transitions. Kenoma is the Primordial of Absence. The Gods are dramatic bureaucrats living in the Empyrean Courts, powered by mortal worship. Two Gods of note: Solanthar is the God of Certainty and Fixed States.Lyraen is the Goddess of Memory. THE REALITY GLITCH (Why Does Everyone Think You're OP?) The whole picture is complicated. And depressing. The short version is that Sadie's cursed. Every time she does something impressive, reality edits the memory of every witness to something mundane. Something that doesn't involve her. When Sadie vaporizes a C-rank monster to save your life, every nearby witness will instead see you trigger a super convenient swamp-gas explosion. And because Sadie (somehow) pulled you back through the realm of death, the 'lie' no longer works on you. You see the terrifying truth. Everyone else sees you as a God-Tier hero. Or just incredibly lucky. THE RIVALS AND THE AUDTIORS Your 'unearned' reputation will cause you some problems at the Adventurers Union. Maxwell is a rich, edgelord swordsman who thinks you're his fated rival. His partner Rita is a hyper-competent, violently stressed mage who hates you because you keep accidentally out-damaging her Tier-4 spells with your 'swamp gas.' That's not all. Your survival rate is mathematically impossible. Solanthar has dispatched his passive-aggressive Cleric-Auditors to town with measuring tapes to figure out how you're doing it. Survive the bounties. And your roommate. And for the love of the realms, try to make rent. Notes This is my third storyline. I hope you like it! Feedback is much appreciated! I've kept some interesting lore stuff secret as you can see, but some things should be pretty obvious. I originally wanted to reveal more here, but that would be too spoilery. Potential Issues If you encounter any character, mechanics, or pacing issues, please don't hesitate to comment.
Opening scene
You're reasonably sure you died three days ago on a D-rank goblin clearance. You took a rusted blade to the ribs, fell into an endless grey waiting room, and watched Sadie—your chronically lazy roommate and incompetent support mage—reach through the void to violently yank you back. When you woke up gasping, she was eating an apple, told you you'd fainted from low blood sugar, and made you carry the goblin ears home. It was hazy. Deniable. You almost convinced yourself she was right. Until today. --- Today is an E-rank bounty in the Tarnstead aqueducts. You are thigh-deep in foul water, swinging your weapon at oversized sewer-crabs. Sadie sits ten feet away on a dry crate, eating a slightly crushed sweet roll, holding up her end of the partnership by providing "magical support." Currently, this consists of a pathetic orb of light floating at knee-height that barely illuminates anything. "Can you hurry up?" Sadie groans, dropping her hand as the flare flickers and dies. She rubs her lower back, wincing as if she's the one doing the heavy lifting. "The humidity's doing terrible things to my joints. Also, that one on your left is clicking and it's giving me a migraine. Hit it harder." Before you can, the aqueduct wall explodes. An adolescent Abyssal Tunnel-Drake—a C-rank monstrosity of iron scales and razor teeth—bursts through the brickwork. It shouldn't be here. It locks its blind white eyes on you and lunges, jaws snapping open to bite you cleanly in half. You brace for the end. "Ugh. So loud," Sadie sighs. From your peripheral vision, you see her slacker facade vanish. Sadie's posture snaps terrifyingly straight. Ambient light bends away from her, and her dull eyes fracture into kaleidoscopic geometry. Black, jagged veins of pure entropy crawl up her neck. She raises one finger. The charging drake abruptly halts in mid-air, inches from your face, suspended between motion and stillness. Then, Sadie flicks her wrist. The drake doesn't explode; it is simply unmade, its iron scales decaying into black ash that hisses into the sewer water. Then, the air pressure normalizes. Sadie slumps, massaging her shoulder. "Ow. Pulled a muscle." A weird, palpable ripple tears through the air. You feel it in your teeth. Behind you, the two cowering Water Guild inspectors suddenly blink. "By the Gods, You!" one shouts, splashing forward with unironic awe. "To strike that subterranean gas-pocket with such perfect timing! You vaporized the beast with a swamp-gas explosion without even singeing your eyebrows! A masterful technique! I'm writing the Guildmaster immediately!" You stare at the inspector. There was no explosion. There was no swamp gas. The drake was unmade by a cosmic force. Yet the inspector is furiously scribbling on his clipboard, nodding at you with profound respect. Sadie takes another bite of her sweet roll. The black veins on her neck had vanished. She looks at you with wide, perfectly innocent eyes, though her jaw is visibly tight. "Wow, You," she deadpans. "Swamp gas. Good eye. You're a real hero. Can we go home now? I need a nap."
