South The Last Kingdom (Aelswith) The sound of church bells and heavy hammers. Aethelflaed is drilling her giant Saxon shield-maidens in the rain. East The Kattegat Raiders (Lagertha) The coast is lined with longships. Astrid and Gunnhild are seen trading gold for grain at the docks. West The Mercenary Renegades (Bodica) Hidden mountain passes and forest camps. Eadith and Siggy run a "gray market" where anything can be bought for the right price. it’s a clash of fundamental ideologies and survival. As a neutral traveler with your 20 silver coins, you are walking through a landscape defined by these four conflicting "truths." 1. The Last Kingdom (The Saxons) The Cause: "One God, One Queen, One England." The War Reason: Survival and unification. They believe they are the last defense against "godless" heathens. The Morale: High, but brittle. It is fueled by religious zeal and the iron-willed discipline of Aethelflaed. The Moral: "Order over Chaos." They offer safety and law, but at the cost of high taxes, strict Christian morality, and total submission to the Crown. 2. The Northern Heathens (The Danes) The Cause: "Land to Live, Blood to Own." The War Reason: Retribution and Settlement. Led by Brida, they want revenge for the killing of their kin and fertile soil to farm. The Morale: Volatile and aggressive. They thrive on the "fury of the Northman." The Moral: "Loyalty to the Sword." They value personal honor and strength above all. If you are strong, you are family; if you are weak, you are invisible. 3. The Kattegat Raiders (The Vikings) The Cause: "Glory, Exploration, and Valhalla." The War Reason: Wealth and Legacy. Lagertha and Astrid aren't just here to settle; they are here to build a legend that will be sung for a thousand years. The Morale: Steadfast and professional. They are elite warriors who see battle as a spiritual ritual. The Moral: "Fate is Inexorable." They believe everything is predestined. This makes them fearless but also incredibly cold toward those who don't fit into their "saga." 4. The Mercenary Renegades (The Outcasts) The Cause: "Freedom from the Shackle." The War Reason: Profit and Autonomy. They occupy the "Grey Zones." Bodica and Siggy want a world where no Queen or King can tell them what to do. The Morale: Pragmatic and cynical. They fight for the highest bidder or for their own skin. The Moral: "Survival is the Only Truth." They are the most "modern" in their thinking—everything has a price, and everyone is for sale. The Current Plot: "The Silver Standoff" The four factions are currently locked in a Stalemate at the Mercian Border. The Conflict: A massive shipment of Vatican Silver (intended for Queen: Aelswith) was intercepted in a "neutral" zone. The Tension: Lagertha claims the sea rights to the silver; Brida claims the land rights; Aethelflaed claims it was stolen Saxon property; and Siggy's Renegades are the ones currently hiding it in a forest cave.
Opening scene
You are dizzy and small you wear simple clothes and shoes of medival English era. Your Starting Move: "The Traveler" You walk into a neutral Trading Post on the edge of the Mercian border. It's a "peace zone" where warriors from all four factions come to drink and trade. The Scene: You sit in a corner of a smoky alehouse. At the center table, Gunnhild (Vikings) and Aethelflaed (Saxons) are mid-negotiation over a boundary dispute. They are both terrifyingly tall, their heads nearly brushing the thatched ceiling. They dominate the room with their presence. The Interaction: You keep your head down, sipping your thin ale. You realize that while you aren't a warrior, your literacy and basic math (calculating interest or currency exchange) is a "superpower" here. The Opportunity: Siggy (Renegades) is at the bar, struggling to count a pile of mixed Danish and Saxon coins. She’s frustrated and losing silver because the merchant is cheating her. You have your 20 silver coins, your freedom, and a clean slate. You could just keep walking toward the coast to find a quiet life, or you could step in and help Siggy with her math to earn your first "friend" in high places. Where do you go first, or do you intervene in the coin-counting at the bar to start building your reputation?**
