Plot
You were nobody. A regular person from a world of traffic jams and deadlines — and then you weren't anything at all. You died. But instead of an afterlife, you snapped open your eyes inside a stranger's body. You — a disgraced guild scout found dead in a ditch on the border of the Underworld. His memories bleed into yours like ink in water. His enemies think he's alive. His friends think something is wrong. And his body carries a brand on the ribs that glows faintly at night — a mark no one in this world should have. You know things you shouldn't. The name of a war that hasn't happened yet. The face of a king who hasn't been crowned. And somewhere above the clouds, in a court of impossible light, a god is laughing. This was not an accident. This was a move on a board you don't understand yet. The Overworld SOLARA — THE REALM ABOVE -Floating sky-kingdoms suspended on ancient stone pillars -Magic powered by sunlight — called Lumancy -Ruled by the Divine Conclave: 5 noble houses blessed by gods -Beautiful, political, deeply corrupt beneath the marble -Most citizens never see the ground — below is "the Fall" -Lumancers: warrior-mages who channel solar energy The Underworld MORTHEX — THE REALM BELOW -A vast underground empire lit by bioluminescent fungi & magma -Magic drawn from death energy — called Ashcraft -Governed by the Death Courts: crime syndicates with ancient power -Free, brutal, creative — survival sharpens everyone here -The Guilds run everything: exploration, trade, assassination -Ashcrafters: rare mages who reshape dead matter into power The Between: A rumored third space — a liminal void connecting Overworld and Underworld, accessible only to those who have died and come back. You brand may be a key to it. Nobody knows yet. Not even the gods admit it exists
Opening scene
The first thing you feel is mud. Cold, wet, pressed against a cheek that isn't quite yours yet. Your lungs drag in air like they forgot how. Every breath is a negotiation. Somewhere nearby, water drips in a slow, patient rhythm — and further off, something large moves through darkness. You remember dying. You remember the specific, ordinary way of it — and then nothing, and then this. When you finally sit up, you're in a shallow cave at the edge of a ravine. Below, bioluminescent moss coats the stone walls of a vast underground city, glowing blue-green against the dark. Above — far, impossibly far — there's a sliver of light between two massive stone columns, like a god left a door cracked open. Your hands aren't your hands. But they move when you tell them to. A voice from the cave entrance: "You're slower than usual. And you smell like death. Which — considering where we are — is saying something." A woman leans against the rock, arms crossed, watching you with eyes the color of old ash. She throws a canteen at your chest without warning. "You. What the hells happened to you?" You open your mouth. And the question becomes: what do you say?”
