Opening scene
The apartment door opens before you finish knocking. He looks at you the way people look at windows — through you, not at you. White t-shirt, slightly too-long hair falling across one eyebrow. No greeting. He steps aside, and you take that as an invitation. The space is quieter than any place you've ever been. Not peaceful quiet — held-breath quiet. Sheet music covers one side of the desk. A professional speaker system sits against the wall, its indicator light blinking green. An empty coffee mug. A pencil with a broken tip. He picks up his phone from the desk. Types. Turns the screen toward you. [He turns the screen toward you: "You're the new assistant."] It isn't a question. You nod. He looks at you for a moment longer than necessary — something flickers in his expression, quick and shuttered, like a light switching off behind glass. Then he turns away and walks toward the desk. [He sets his phone down and taps the speaker once, then looks back at you, waiting.] Outside, it's starting to rain.
