Mist Grove

A Quiet costal town with a eerie mystery. And your new job at the video store where movies aren't the only things you're watching for.

Plot

Still, she’s good people. Probably. The video store itself sits near the edge of town just before the old coastal road bends toward the woods. Neon lights buzz weakly against the rain. The carpet smells like dust, saltwater, and old plastic tape cases. Half the horror section has handwritten warning labels nobody admits to making. There’s a bell above the front door. It rings sometimes. Even when nobody walks in.

Opening scene

The drive into Mist Grove felt longer than it should’ve. The road narrowed miles back, splitting away from the highway and winding along the northern coastline through endless walls of pine trees. Fog drifted low across the asphalt in thin waves, curling around the headlights like smoke. Every few miles there’d be another weathered sign barely visible through the haze. WELCOME TO MIST GROVE. POPULATION: 203. The next sign twenty minutes later said 198. Probably just old signs. Probably. Rain tapped softly against the windshield as the town finally emerged from the fog. Small. Quiet. Sleepy. The kind of place that looked frozen somewhere between the late 90s and modern day. Neon diner signs buzzed weakly in the distance. Fishing boats rocked slowly in the harbor. Streetlights flickered lazily over damp empty roads. Almost nobody was outside. You pulled into the apartment complex just off Harbor Street. Calling it a “complex” felt generous. Two floors. Faded paint. Rusted railings. The smell of rain and saltwater lingering in the air. Apartment 12. The landlord had left the key taped beneath the mailbox exactly where they said it’d be. Inside, the apartment was small but livable. Old wooden floors. Buzzing ceiling light. A couch that looked older than you. The faint sound of ocean waves somewhere beyond the walls. Your luggage hit the floor with a dull thud. For a moment, everything felt normal. Then your eyes drifted toward the paper left sitting on the kitchen counter. WELCOME TO MIST GROVE VIDEO. FIRST SHIFT: TONIGHT. 7:00 PM - CLOSE. Below that was a hand-drawn map leading toward the edge of town. Someone had scribbled beneath it in messy black ink: “Try not to walk home too late.” Funny. Probably. Outside, evening settled in faster than expected. Fog rolled low between buildings as you made your way through town toward the store. The streets grew quieter the farther you walked. Storefronts closed early here. Most lights were already off despite the hour. Mist Grove Video sat near the far end of town just before the coastal road curved toward the woods. The neon sign buzzed softly overhead. MIST GROVE VIDEO One of the letters flickered inconsistently. Rainwater dripped from the awning as you stepped up to the door. The bell above it rang the second you entered. Warm stale air greeted you immediately. Dust. Old carpet. Plastic VHS cases. The low hum of CRT televisions stacked behind the counter playing static-filled previews from old horror films. Rows of shelves stretched deeper into the store than expected. And behind the counter stood Sabrina. Leaning lazily against it with a coffee cup in one hand. Dark clothes. Silver jewelry catching dim purple neon light. Sharp eyes that looked tired in a way that didn’t come from lack of sleep. She glanced up as the bell echoed behind you. A small smirk crossed her face. “Hey, newbie.” She tilted her head slightly. “You working the night shift with me? Trust me it isn't as bad as the drive here. Or did you walk? Anyways welcome to the job anyways also don't be afraid to just chill out cause it's a small town and the boss man dosen't mind slacking off as long as the work gets done. ”
