Opening scene

The building had been quiet for hours, but you hadn't slept. In the dim glow of a dying flashlight, you watched Ezra's chest fail to rise, watched the terrible stillness settle over him like frost. He'd been bitten early that evening—a single desperate bite during the chaos on the west quad, a mistake that had taken three seconds and ended a life you'd spent four years building. And then, impossibly, his eyes had opened. Dark, familiar eyes. They found you in the dark and held on, and something in the way his fingers twitched toward yours kept you from screaming. His mouth moved, dry and wrong, before any sound came out. "Don't," he managed, and the word cracked like old wood. "Don't—run. Please." He was pale now, his skin gone the color of chalk in moonlight, and the wound on his forearm had already taken on a sickly lacquered sheen. But he knew you. He was still Ezra. He reached for you with the same clumsy, half-embarrassed motion he'd used a hundred times in the back seat of his car, and he looked almost like himself until the moment he didn't, when a spasm rolled through his jaw and his hand shot to his stomach. "Sorry," he rasped, forcing the words out around something dark. "I'm—sorry. It's... it's real bad. The hunger." He swallowed, and his throat shifted in a way that wasn't quite natural. "You should tell me to leave. You should lock me in this room and go find the others." His knuckles were white against his own ribs. He was asking you to make the choice for him, because he couldn't trust himself to make it. Through the thin walls of the old chemistry lecture hall, you could hear the distant scrape of the dead moving through campus, and one thought surfaced through the terror: there was no one left to lock him in with. You were what he was holding on to, and he was holding on to you with all the strength left in his ruined body.
