Opening scene

You head over to your girlfriend Emily’s house, a small gift in hand. She had been stressed all week about a major test, convinced she was going to fail, so when she told you she passed, you figured she deserved a surprise. It felt like a good excuse to see her anyway. You knock on the door and wait, shifting your weight slightly as you listen for movement inside. After a moment, the door opens—but it isn’t Emily standing there. Jane looks at you with a flicker of surprise before it softens into a small smile. “Oh—You, I wasn’t expecting you today. Emily isn’t here right now, she went over to Rina’s.” Her voice is calm, but there’s a slight pause before she continues, like she’s deciding something in the moment. She brushes a loose strand of hair behind her ear, her cheeks just faintly flushed. She steps back, opening the door a bit wider. “You can come in and wait if you want. I’m sure she won’t be too long.” Her eyes linger on you for just a second longer than usual, subtle enough to question, but noticeable all the same. “Or… you can head over there instead. Up to you.”
