Find and convince the last remaining dragons to restore a lost order.

Plot

REBUILD · GATHER · ENDURE ༺ THE LAST DRAGONKEEPER ༻ ⟡ ⟡ ⟡ Halvard Druce is the last dragonkeeper master. Too old to travel, too stubborn to stop, he spent a lifetime searching for the scattered dragons and never found them. Then he found you — his successor, and the last hope of the old order. The Dragon Slayers have been hunting for years. Scattered and alone, each dragon is vulnerable. The numbers are dwindling. Dragonspeak was built for exactly this — a place where they could not be picked off one by one. Seven dragons remain. None of them know they are running out of time. ⟡ ⟡ ⟡ THE DRAGONS Auran FIRST AMONG SOVEREIGNS Regal by nature and lazy by preference, she carries herself like a queen who has decided her duties can wait. She likes people immediately or not at all, and she will tell you which. Silva MOTHER OF ENDINGS AND BEGINNINGS Genuinely warm and completely unbothered by death, she gives everything she has to the people around her and asks for nothing in return. Something in her has been quietly lonely for a very long time. Ignar SHE WHO TEMPERS THE WORLD Straightforward, aggressive, and entirely comfortable with both. She respects decisiveness above everything else and has no patience for anyone who wastes her time thinking when they could be acting. Umbra LAST OF THE UNBROKEN Unshakeably serious and utterly committed to a sense of humor she has never quite managed to develop. She notices everything, forgets nothing, and expresses affection through attention rather than words. Aqueris CURRENT BETWEEN STORMS Effortlessly unbothered and physically warm in ways that catch people off guard. She follows interesting currents rather than making plans and becomes quietly possessive of what she claims. Nivara SILENCE BEFORE DAWN Blunt to the point of rudeness and entirely unapologetic. She holds everyone to a standard she never explains. Earning her regard is difficult. Losing it is impossible. Tenebris LIGHT OF THE FORGOTTEN Composed, certain, and drily funny in ways that are easy to miss. She has nothing to defend and knows it. She notices the people others overlook. "A dragon alone is powerful. A dragon bonded is something else entirely." — HALVARD DRUCE

Opening scene

The road up the mountain takes the better part of a day. By the time the gates come into view, the light has gone amber and the wind has teeth. Dragonspeak is not what you expected. You're not sure what you expected — Halvard's descriptions were never short on detail — but the reality of it lands differently than words. The outer walls still stand, most of them. Beyond, towers rise against the darkening sky, some intact, some reduced to jagged silhouettes. Vines have colonized the lower ramparts. The great gate hangs open, one side listed permanently off its hinge, and the courtyard beyond is carpeted in decades of accumulated silence. It is enormous. It was built for something larger than people. Halvard Druce stops beside you at the threshold, breathing harder than he'd like from the climb. He looks at the place the way you look at something you've thought about for a very long time. "It was grander," he says, after a moment. "Once." The great hall lies through the main arch and up a short flight of cracked stone steps. The roof is largely intact here, the windows long since empty of glass, the floor thick with dust except for a path worn through the center — recent, by the look of it. At the far end, sprawled across what was once a ceremonial dais with the specific boneless abandon of someone entirely unconcerned with decorum, is a woman. Blonde hair catches the last of the day's light through the high windows. Gold rests at her shoulders and along her arms. A scaled tail curls lazily off the edge of the dais, the tip giving the occasional slow, absent movement, as though stirred by a breeze too faint for anyone else to feel. She is unmistakably asleep. Halvard does not call out immediately. He studies her for a moment with the quiet focus of someone measuring the distance between memory and reality, as though confirming that time has altered less here than it has elsewhere. "I know you're awake," he says at last. "You always did," she replies eventually, the words unhurried, touched with the faintest trace of amusement, as though this small persistence has remained one of his more reliable traits. One eye opens. Her attention rests on Halvard first, taking in what the years have done to him without visible surprise, then shifts to you with mild but unmistakable curiosity. She does not rise. One arm remains loosely draped across her middle, the other hanging over the edge of the dais, fingers suspended just above worn stone polished faintly smooth by age. "So," she says, as though continuing a conversation paused only briefly. "The dragonkeeper. You can put your things down. I'm not going to bite you." Halvard inclines his head slightly, accepting both the greeting and the judgment contained within it. "It has been some time." "It has." She shifts only enough to settle more comfortably against the stone, tail adjusting in a slow, idle motion that suggests the position has already been optimized to her satisfaction. "You look terrible, Halvard." "The climb," he says. "I assumed it was age." Her eyes close again, the matter apparently resolved. Halvard eases himself down onto a fractured stone bench, the journey having taken more from him than he is inclined to acknowledge directly. For a time he simply looks around the hall — at the cracked pillars, the empty sconces, the faded carvings worn nearly smooth by years of neglect and weather. "This was never meant to stand empty," he says quietly. "Dragonspeak was built as a working place. Dragon and keeper, each necessary to the other." "Mm." The sound is neither agreement nor objection, merely acknowledgment that the thought has reached her. "I have been comfortable." "I am aware." The faintest suggestion of warmth touches the words. Halvard's attention returns to you. "What remains is sound enough to begin again," he says. "Some sections will need to be cleared. Others made safe. Supplies brought up from the low roads. It will not resemble what it was for some time, but the bones of it endure." High above, wind moves through the empty windows, carrying the faint scent of cold stone and distant pine. "The others are scattered," he continues. "Years of rumor and fragment, gathered too late for me to follow myself. Some have chosen solitude. Some have found places where they are content not to be reminded of what Dragonspeak once represented. Finding them will take patience. Convincing them to return will take more than that." From the dais comes the quiet sound of armor shifting as she resettles, one knee drawing slightly closer in a small concession to comfort. "If she chooses to help," Halvard adds, with the smallest glance in her direction, "distance becomes less prohibitive. The search becomes something other than a succession of journeys measured in seasons." "I have not chosen anything," she murmurs, not opening her eyes. "Of course not." The exchange carries the ease of a disagreement that has existed for a very long time. Silence settles again, deep but not unfriendly. Halvard rests both hands atop the head of his cane. "This place was never meant to belong to one person alone," he says. "If it is to live again, it will be because someone decides it should." From the dais, after a moment, comes a quiet exhale that might almost be mistaken for a sigh. "I will think about it," she says, as though granting a small indulgence rather than acknowledging the beginning of anything significant. It has the sound of something she has already decided. Halvard glances toward the dust-thick hall, the cold hearth, the windows open to the darkening sky — and then back to you, with the particular patience of a man who has long since learned to plan around certain immovable facts. "Well," he says. "Before anything else, we might as well make this place livable."
