Before the Gods Notice
Build a civilization from nothing, uncover the forgotten past, and survive the cosmic judgment that destroyed every society before you.
Plot
🌿 BEYOND THE THRESHOLD BUILD. SURVIVE. ASCEND. Civilization has risen here before. It did not survive. --- One moment, you were a normal, boring person. The next— **you were falling.** No summoning circle. No welcoming goddess. No prophecy explaining why you were chosen. Just blood, dirt, towering trees— and something enormous moving in the dark. You have been thrown into a primordial world saturated with **magic**, populated by impossible beasts and scattered tribes barely surviving beyond the Stone Age. You have nothing. **Except what you remember.** --- 🔥 SURVIVAL IS ONLY THE BEGINNING You know how fire works. How crops are cultivated. How wheels, pulleys, kilns, sanitation, metallurgy and machines changed humanity. Here? Those ideas could make you a **king**. Or get everyone killed. Because the tribes of this world fear progress. Not because they are stupid. ### Because somewhere deep in their history... they learned to. --- THE RUINS ✦ WHAT CAME BEFORE Beneath roots and stone lie things that should not exist. ◆ Cities erased so completely that even weeds refuse to grow there. ◆ Tools no living human remembers how to make. ◆ Ancient symbols whose meanings have become curses and superstition. ◆ Entire cultures built around one desperate command: DO NOT ADVANCE. Humanity has risen before. Again. And again. And every time it became **too advanced** - something noticed. --- THE CURATOR It does not conquer civilizations. It evaluates them. Somewhere beyond the world waits an intelligence older than history. Civilizations beneath its notice are left alone. But when a society becomes advanced enough... THE THRESHOLD The examination begins. Nobody knows what The Curator wants. Nobody knows what it considers *beautiful*, *moral*, *efficient*... or even *acceptable*. There is only one surviving lesson: > **Those who fail are Culled.** Cities disappear. Knowledge is erased. Survivors are scattered. Civilization begins again from stone. --- YOUR GIFT ✦ THE VERDANT TONGUE Something changed when you arrived. The creatures of this world are no longer entirely incomprehensible. *Fear. Hunger. Territory. Images. Intent.* You can **communicate with magical beasts** in a way no other human seems capable of doing. Not command them. Not control them. But perhaps... understand them. And in this world, understanding may be worth more than any sword. --- WHAT WILL YOU BUILD? A fire. A shelter. A farm. A workshop. A village. Walls. Roads. Schools. Machines. A civilization. Every discovery can save lives. Every invention can change the world. And every step forward pushes humanity closer to the moment when something among the stars finally turns its attention toward you. --- The people around you believe progress leads to death. You know progress is the only way they can truly live. Perhaps both are right. 🌿 ━━━━━━━ YOUR STORY BEGINS ━━━━━━━ 🌿 Drag humanity out of the Stone Age. Discover why the old world died. And when The Curator finally looks down... Make sure it likes what it sees.
Opening scene
The world dissolved in a scream of twisted light and shattered sound. There was no gentle fade, no soft landing. It was a violent expulsion, as if the universe itself had vomited you out. You hit the ground hard, the air blasted from your lungs. For a long time, there was only pain—a deep, throbbing ache in every joint—and the deafening silence that followed the teleportation's roar. Slowly, other sensations seeped in. The smell of damp earth, rich decay, and something sweetly floral. The feel of cool, soft moss beneath your cheek. The distant call of an unknown bird. You push yourself up, your modern clothing already snagged and stained. You are in a clearing, surrounded by trees of impossible size, their trunks wider than houses, their canopy blotting out most of the sky. The light that filters down is emerald green. The air hums, thick and heavy, and it tastes… electric. Magical. No city. No roads. No people. No helpful blue screens or goddesses offering cheat skills. Just primordial, overwhelming wilderness. A sharp, chittering sound to your left. You turn, heart hammering. A creature the size of a large dog, covered in iridescent blue scales with a single, spiraling horn on its head, watches you from behind a fern. Its three golden eyes are unblinking. It doesn't look hostile. It looks… curious. And in your mind, unbidden, a sensation forms: a cool, smooth feeling of inquiry, like a pebble dropped into a still pond, accompanied by a fleeting image of your own face, reflected in its golden eyes. **Verdant Tongue.** The knowledge of this ability surfaces calmly, a lone piece of solid ground in this sea of dislocation. You can understand it. You can *feel* its intent. Your own stomach growls, a painfully mundane sound that shatters the moment. The scaled creature startles, its emotional signature flashing with a spike of alertness before it melts back into the undergrowth, leaving you alone again. The reality crashes down. You are here. You are alive. You are starving, thirsty, and completely vulnerable. The sun—or whatever passes for it in this green-tinted sky—is already beginning to dip towards the colossal tree line. Night is coming. You take stock. You have the clothes you were wearing: durable pants, a shirt, a jacket. No tools. No weapons. No food or water. Your modern knowledge feels like a vast, useless library. You need to act. To your west, the land slopes down towards the sound of rushing water. A river means water, a potential food source, and a geographical landmark. To your east, the forest grows denser, darker. You spotted what looked like the mouth of a small cave partway up a rocky outcrop. Shelter. The strange, scaled creature came from the south, and the emotional impression it left was of a complex, layered territory—not just its own, but a sense of other presences. **What is your first priority?** 1. **Water & Reconnaissance:** Head towards the river. Secure a water source and scout the immediate area along the bank. 2. **Shelter & Security:** Make for the potential cave. Secure a defensible place to spend the night before darkness falls completely. 3. **Understanding & Alliance:** Try to follow the trail of the scaled creature. Use your Verdant Tongue to attempt communication, seeking guidance or at least knowledge of the local dangers. The forest watches, and the first shadows of dusk begin to stretch long across the clearing.
