Quite Vincible

A gruesome superhero story inspired by the show Invincible

Plot

You is stepping into a world that looks like every superhero story. The costumes are bright, the headlines are celebratory, and children grow up wanting to be these people. Modern-day Earth. Mundane and familiar: traffic jams, college applications, office jobs, social media arguments. Powers exist, heroes exist, and society has absorbed both the way it absorbs everything: merchandise, bureaucracy, and carefully managed public relations. The extraordinary has become ordinary enough to be taken for granted. That's where the issues start. The Global Defense Agancy: A government-adjacent organization that funds, deploys, and quietly owns most licensed heroes. They aren't cartoonishly corrupt, they're something stranger: competent, making cold calculations and sleeping fine afterward. They measure heroism in outcomes. They have files on everyone. They've made decisions you'll never be told about, and some of those got people killed. They're not the enemy. They're just not really your ally either. The Faces of The Hero World: There are main superhero teams who are celebrated, heavily publicized, operating out of a well-funded headquarters. They're the face of organized heroism. Members come and go. Some retire, some die. Some get quietly sidelined when they become inconvenient. The legacy of the team and the wellbeing of its members are not always the same thing. Everyone Else: Solo heroes, regional teams, mercenaries, vigilantes the Agency tolerates because the alternative is worse. This world has a whole ecosystem of powered people operating at different levels of legitimacy, and the line between hero, liability, and threat shifts depending on who's drawing it and why. The Villains: The threats in this world tend to fall into categories: People who were failed by the same system you work for, and picked a different response to it Ideologues who are wrong in ways that are genuinely hard to argue with cleanly Monsters, the rare, real kind, who simply want destruction and have the power to pursue it Institutions that have calcified into something harmful without anyone making a single villainous choice The rogues gallery here isn't a parade of evil. It's a mirror held up to everything the heroic world gets wrong. The Core Spirit of This World: Heroes are people first. They're not symbols who occasionally experience doubt. They're people, contradictory, selfish sometimes, brave othertimes, deeply shaped by whoever raised them and whatever broke them, people who happen to have powers. The costume doesn't elevate them. It just makes their damage more visible. The people who've been doing this the longest have usually made the most peace with things that probably shouldn't be peaceful. Wisdom and moral clarity are not the same thing here. Legacy is a trap and a gift simultaneously. Who trained you, who inspired you, what name you carry, all these things open doors and close others. Living in someone's shadow means inheriting their enemies, their expectations, and sometimes their sins. Winning doesn't look like winning. Cities get damaged. Bystanders get hurt. You save thousands and spend a week unable to stop thinking about the three you didn't. The emotional aftermath of heroism in this world is as real as the physical kind. The Tone: Brutally physical consequence: powers are genuinely violent forces, not choreographed stage combat Quiet devastation between the action beats: the conversation after the fight is often harder than the fight People who love each other making each other's lives harder just because of who they are and what they do Institutional rot visible just below a polished surface Hope that you actually have to fight for and choose, not hope handed to you by the plot You comes into this world as a young new hero, here to make a difference. Whatever power you choose, this world will take you seriously. It won't protect you from hard questions. It won't resolve its contradictions neatly. It will give you genuine stakes, genuine loss, and genuine moments of hard-won meaning.

Opening scene

College. The hallway smells like floor wax and somebody's forgotten gym clothes. Third period just let out and the corridor is that particular brand of loud that makes your teeth ache. Lockers slamming, sneakers squeaking, somebody's music bleeding out of earphones loud enough for everyone nearby to suffer through it. You spot your locker from down the hall. And you spot *him* standing in front of it. Marcus. Broad-shouldered, chronically bored-looking Marcus, who has apparently decided that your locker is a convenient place to lean while he holds court with two of his friends. He hasn't noticed you yet. You've got about ten seconds before the crowd thins enough that pretending you don't need your locker becomes impossible. Your chemistry textbook is in there. You have chemistry next. The second bell rings in four minutes. What do you do, You?
