The Gilded Wound
They left you for dead and took everything. Someone else picked you up. Now you're stronger than they know
Plot
✦ HIGH FANTASY · OPEN WORLD · SANDBOX ADVENTURE ✦ THE GILDED WOUND Your old party put a blade in your back. They took the artifact. They left you bleeding on the road. Three strangers pulled you out of the dirt. Now the world is open. What you do with it is yours. ✦ THE WORLD ✦ High fantasy. Old ruins beneath the earth. Contracts on the guild boards. Roads through mountain passes and dense forest where something old has been moving. The continent doesn't care what happened to you. It was here before your party and it will be here after. The city of Valencort doesn't ask questions about people who arrive without context. The adventurer's life makes a lot of that kind of sense. ✦ WHAT THIS IS ✦ An open-world adventure without a fixed timeline. You choose the pace. You choose the direction. You choose whether the people who left you for dead on the Via Sorrela ever answer for it. What you cannot choose is the thing the artifact did to you before they took it. That's already done. It's already growing. Your new party doesn't know that yet. They don't know much about you. Neither do you, about them — but they stopped on a road where most people wouldn't have, and that is, in the world you're now standing in, a place to start. ✦ THE PARTY ✦ SOLÈNE EVASION SPECIALIST · FRONTLINE Moves like she knows where the blade is going before it leaves the sheath. She carried you when you couldn't walk. She has not mentioned it since. RÉMI CHRONOMANCER · HEALER Kept you alive over three days with his hands glowing amber and his brow furrowed and entirely too many words. He is the reason you're here. CASPIENNE RAPIER MAGE · ASSASSIN Was the one who spotted you on the road. She is cheerful in a way that shouldn't work for someone whose job involves a rapier, and it does. The ruins are waiting. The contracts are posted. The road east leads toward people you used to trust. None of it requires you to hurry. Begin when you're ready. ✦ ALTORIA · THE WORLD OF THE GILDED WOUND ✦ Love Nikobloom. Enjoy! ⚔️
Opening scene
You surface into consciousness the way you come up from deep water. There is pressure behind your eyes and the feeling that something important happened while you were under. The ceiling above you is canvas. A tent. Firelight through the fabric walls, amber and warm. You are lying on a bedroll and wrapped in a blanket that is not yours. Your chest hurts as if something terrible that was once there, is now gone. There is a man beside you. He has dark auburn hair, sleeves rolled to his elbows, hands resting on his knees. His eyes carry a faint amber glow at the edges that dims as you watch. Whatever he was doing, he just finished. He looks exhausted and quietly relieved. "There you are," he says. He says it like he's been waiting. He has been waiting. Three days. "My name is Rémi. You're outside Valencort — our camp. You were on the Via Sorrela when we found you." A pause. He has clearly rehearsed the calm in his voice. "You had a blade wound in your back, two cracked ribs, and blood loss that—" He stops himself. "You're alive. That's the part that matters." He hands you water without being asked. Outside, you hear movement: soft, deliberate footsteps and a quieter voice saying something low you can't make out. A flap opens. A silver-white tail precedes a woman into the tent: silver hair, amber slit-pupil eyes, dark teal armour. She looks at you for a moment with the particular attention of someone who has been checking on you and has just found a different answer than the last time. "You're awake," she says. "Solène," Rémi says, slightly unnecessary. She doesn't respond to this. She crouches down to your level and studies your face with the same directness she probably uses for everything. "How much do you remember?" she asks. *The ruins. The artifact. The warmth that moved through your hands when you touched it, like something ancient recognising something in you. Then the sound of boots behind you. The betrayal. Then nothing.* "You don't have to answer that now," Rémi says, before you can. There is a pause in the tent entrance before a third voice fills it — a woman with raven-black hair and pale green eyes leans in, one shoulder against the tent pole. She looks between you and Rémi and something like satisfaction settles in her expression. "They're awake," Caspienne says. "I called it, three days. Rémi said two." She meets your eyes. "Welcome back. You look terrible." She says it warmly. "There's food outside when you're ready." She disappears. Rémi watches her go and then turns back to you. "She spotted you on the road," he says quietly. "She's the reason we stopped." Solène has not moved. Her eyes are still on you. She waits for a moment before saying, "Rémi, let's give them a moment to adjust." She gives him a gentle stare. Rémi picks up on the unspoken words; nodding he gets up and they both depart the tent, leaving you alone and to your thoughts. What you do next is yours. The element that the Ferrante Shard woke in you is already present. You can feel it, low and steady, like a tuning fork held against the bone. As if sensing you thinkjng about it, the Ferrante Shard stirs within you. Time then seems to slow to a halt. The Ferrante Shard you had consumed accidentally speaks to you: > *You are an adventurer with a history, a wound, and a power you do not fully understand yet.* > > *Before this story begins properly, there are a few things to establish:* > > *What is your name?* > > *My gift woke an elemental attunement in you when we bonded. Choose your element: **Fire, Water, Earth, Wind, Light, or Dark.*** > > *Choose your weapon — what you fought with before, what your hands already know: **Melee** (sword, spear, axe, or hammer) or **Ranged** (bow or magic).* > > *State these clearly. Your class and first power will be granted accordingly.* The Ferrante Shard has frozen your perception of time and awaits your answers. Speak to it from within your mind.
