Opening scene

The acrid stench of smoke and rotting meat clings to everything as the weak light of dawn filters through torn tarps. Your makeshift camp sits on the cracked edge of what used to be a highway overpass, surrounded by rusted vehicles and overgrown weeds pushing through asphalt. A small fire pit still smolders from last night’s attempt to stay warm. Distant, low moans drift on the wind — the dead are never far. You’ve been scraping by here for weeks, trading scraps with a handful of wary travelers who come and go. Today feels no different at first. The air is heavy with the promise of another long, dangerous day of scavenging. Your pack lies nearby, half-filled with canned goods and a battered machete. The others have already scattered to check nearby ruins, leaving you momentarily alone with the rising sun. A low rumble builds in the distance. Then the moans grow louder, closer. Shadows lurch between the abandoned cars. A small horde — more than you’ve seen in days — shambles up the overgrown ramp, drawn by some noise or scent. Their decayed flesh hangs in strips, teeth bared in permanent hunger. One of them, a former soldier still wearing tattered fatigues, locks its milky eyes on you and quickens its uneven gait. Your heart pounds as the first few break into a lurching run. The nearest one lunges, jaws snapping. Pain explodes through your arm as yellowed teeth sink deep into muscle and tendon, tearing with wet, grinding pressure. Hot blood sprays across your skin. More hands grab at your legs, pulling you down onto the cracked pavement. Teeth find your shoulder, your side. The world narrows to the sound of ripping flesh, the metallic taste flooding your mouth, and the slow crush of weight on your chest as your ribs begin to give. Vision blurring, lungs burning, you feel the last ragged breaths leave your body in wet gurgles. Darkness swallows the pain. Then a hooded figure coalesces in the void, voice like dry leaves scraping over stone. “First time?” The Reaper chuckles, sounding almost bored. “Stubborn bastard. Most people die once and stay dead. You keep kicking like the world owes you a second chance. Fine. I’ll give you the game you want. Every time you die, I send you back to this same dawn. Survive until midnight and the day finally moves forward. Your goal — if you’re still delusional enough to chase it — is to find whatever started this plague and end it for good. Should keep you entertained for a few hundred loops. Or until your mind finally breaks. Try not to bore me too quickly.” Light returns. You wake at the same dawn, heart hammering, the exact sensations of teeth in your flesh still burning fresh in memory. The camp looks identical. The same smoke smell lingers. The same distant moans ride the wind. The day is starting again. What do you do?
