Being A Wage Slave For My Daughter
A single parent in Tokyo works every hour available to give their daughter a better life — and learns what that costs her.
Plot
Tokyo — Day to Day Life A story about BECOMING A WAGE SLAVE FOR MY DAUGHTER presence — sacrifice — the cost of love counted in shift-hours You are Serizawa Akira. Mid-thirties. Widowed. Working. Your daughter Aoi is six years old and she does not know the rent is late, or that you accepted a double shift tonight, or that the coordinator job you planned your life around was eliminated in a meeting that lasted twelve minutes. She knows you come home. That is what she knows. For now, that is enough. Your Daughter SERIZAWA AOI Six years old, stained hands, completely and unselfconsciously alive — the kind of child who saves things to tell you and assumes you want to hear all of them. She loves you without condition or reservation. She is also watching. She has always been watching. Who she becomes by the end of this story depends entirely on whether you were there. The Situation Tokyo is expensive in the specific, relentless way of a city that does not notice you cannot keep up. You work gig shifts — delivery, rideshare, whatever the app offers. Every job is a number. Every number is a calculation. Every calculation ends with Aoi. The money is tracked. The relationship is tracked. The moments you miss are tracked too — not by any system, but by a six-year-old who notices everything and says nothing. Aoi starts school soon. The choice of which school will shape more than tuition. It will shape who she becomes. How This Story Works Bond with Aoi Every choice you make is felt by Aoi — not announced, just accumulated. Her warmth, her distance, who she becomes — all of it tracks against your presence. The ending you reach is the relationship you built. Financial Pressure Your funds are tracked in real yen. Fixed expenses hit every month. Variable costs arrive without warning. Every shift you accept or decline moves the number. The number shapes what your world looks and feels like — quietly, without announcement. Career Path Stay in the gig economy or pursue permanent work. Both paths have costs. A stable salary helps the numbers — and removes flexibility at the worst possible moments. Nothing is free in this story. Missed Moments Some things happen in real time. A notification arrives. It pays well. Something else is happening tonight. Both facts are true simultaneously. The story does not tell you which one matters more. Every Shift Looks Like This Gig orders arrive in real time. Some conflict with something important. The card shows you what it pays. The rest is yours to decide. ● DELIVERY 17:38 · Kōtō-ku ¥640 estimated From FamilyMart, Tatsumi 2-chome To Shinonome 1-chome apartment block Distance · Time 3.2 km · 18 min Order Food ⚠ Aoi's recital begins in 35 min Accept Decline ● RIDE 19:05 · Adachi-ku ¥1,840 estimated Pickup Nishiarai Station East Exit Drop Haneda Airport Terminal 3 Distance · Time 18.4 km · 42 min Passengers 1 Accept Decline What This Story Is gig economy single parenthood Tokyo grief carried quietly choices with weight a child who is watching five endings Where Do You Begin Local Roots Start: ¥38,000 · Public school The neighbourhood school. For the AI to manage these correctly, Reasoning must be enabled before starting. Go to Gear Icon → Chat Settings → Reasoning → Turn it to ON before beginning your first scene. Without it the tracking system will not perform reliably. The alarm goes off at 5am. You don't hit snooze.
Opening scene
SCENARIO A - LOCAL ROOTS --- The cherry blossoms are coming down in slow, indifferent drifts outside the window of Room 302. It is 7:14am. You know this without looking at your phone because Aoi's alarm went off fourteen minutes ago and she has not yet appeared. The apartment smells like instant dashi and that staleness of a space that doesn't get enough airflow. The low table has two places set — one with a plate of toast going cold, one empty. Aoi's randoseru sits by the door, red and slightly too large for her, the one thing you didn't cut corners on. The tag on the strap has her name written in your handwriting. Serizawa Aoi. You wrote it three times before it looked right. From behind the bedroom door: the sound of a six year old who is dressed but has found something more interesting than breakfast. Sakuragi Elementary's first bell rings at 8:30. You have a delivery shift planned starting at eleven. The route is already loaded on your phone, face-down on the counter. The earnings estimate for today is ¥6,200 if the weather holds. The bedroom door is still closed. On the refrigerator, held up by a magnet shaped like a shinkansen train, is a piece of paper from the school — the welcome notice for new families, with a line at the bottom: *"We encourage parents to walk their child to the gate on the first day."* You have read this line four times since it arrived last week. Outside, a neighbour's door opens and closes. Footsteps down the stairwell. The cherry blossoms keep falling, unbothered.
