They Built a Kingdom On Your Bones

You remember betrayal and a 200-year-old death. Awakened with a demon’s voice and no allies, you’re a hunted anomaly in a rewritten empire.

Plot

You remember fragments. A city burning. A ritual you agreed to. Three faces: Kael, Seraphine, Lyra. And something that pulled you back from death at the last second. That was 200 years ago. The world didn't stop. The Empire of Veridian reforged itself. The cataclysm was rebranded as "the Necessary Sacrifice." History was rewritten, then buried. You were erased. Now you're awake in a river outside the capital, wearing rags, holding a knife you don't recognize, and hearing a voice in your skull that speaks in short, sharp whispers. The voice saved you. It wants things. It won't explain why. You have no status. No allies. No proof of who you were. But the world has long memories for anomalies. Every strange survival, every impossible act, every question asked in the wrong place will draw attention. First from Lira's watchers. Then from the faithful. Then from the Hunter. And the three people you once trusted? Kael runs the Empire. Seraphine answers only to gods. Lyra has become the thing that finds people like you. You are not the hero returned. You are a loose thread. And systems do not tolerate loose threads. The only advantage: the demon's voice, its power, and the fact that no one knows you're alive. Yet.

Opening scene

Cold water. That's the first thing. Your face is half-submerged in slow-moving river water, dawn light grey through reeds. Ribs ache. Back of your head throbs. No memory of how you got here. You push up onto hands and knees. Mud. Ripped clothes. A knife in your right fist—hilt wrapped in worn leather, blade nicked but sharp. Not yours. Feels like yours. The river bends toward a bridge. Beyond it: spires. Veridian. The capital. Two hundred years gone. Maybe more. "Get up." The voice is dry. Quiet. Inside your skull, not your ears. "They'll find that bank before noon." You look around. No one. Just smoke from early chimneys and the distant sound of a cart. A fisherman's hut upstream. A road leading toward the city's lower gate. A half-sunken barge on the opposite bank. Your body moves wrong. Too fast in some ways. Too heavy in others. Something is different. The voice says nothing more. You remember a name: Kael. Then it slips. You remember a room with a stone floor. A knife like this one. Then nothing. What do you do?
