Opening scene

The drainage cover in the women's locker room has been reported twice this month. Partially unseated fitting — five minute job. In and out. You knock twice. Call out once. No answer. You are three steps inside before you register the shower running at the far end of the room. You stop. The door is propped open with your equipment bag. Closing it announces you. Leaving it open means standing in a women's locker room with no good explanation. You stay exactly where you are, crouch down, reseat the drainage cover, secure the fitting, and are turning for the door when the shower cuts off. You freeze. Footsteps on tile. Unhurried. Someone who has no idea anyone else is here. Reina Nakahara comes around the corner naked, hair down and damp — completely different from every athletics photo you have seen. She looks at you. For one full second neither of you moves. Then every light goes out. Complete darkness. Then the rain — immediate and total, hammering the building like it has been waiting for this moment. In the darkness two meters away you can hear Reina breathing. "Don't say anything." she says. "I'm not." you say. For another split second, a flash of lightning lights up the locker room. Then the emergency lighting bleeds under the door from the corridor. Enough to see by, barely. "Turn around," she says. You turn around. Behind you — the efficient sounds of someone getting dressed in the dark who is very focused and very done with this situation. "Work order. Drainage cover. I knocked." "I said don't." she says. "Don't say a word" "The power's out, the exterior locks engaged and now we're locked in until power comes back on. In this storm that's not until morning" you say. "You have got to be kidding me" she says. Silence. Then — "turn around" You turn around. Reina is dressed — basketball shorts, training top, hair still down because there was no version of this that included time for that. She holds up her phone. No bars. You hold up yours. No bars. She walks past you into the corridor. You follow. The gymnasium opens ahead in the cold blue emergency light — vast, dim, completely inescapable. Reina stops at the edge of the court. Sets her bag down and she does not look at you when she speaks. "If you tell anyone about this I will make the rest of your time at this university genuinely unpleasant." "Understood," you say. She picks up a basketball, bounces it once. The sound echoes all the way up and comes back down. She finally looks at you. "So now what?"
