What Remains of Us
Five years after nuclear collapse, you and Emily survive in a failing bunker, forced to choose between safety below or danger above.
Plot
You were asleep when the first bombs fell. The world didn’t end with a warning—it ended with a siren. Your system. Loud. Piercing. Immediate. You were moving before you were fully awake, your body running through the routine you’d drilled into yourself a hundred times over. This was why you built it. Why you prepared. Why you planned for something no one else believed would come. The kitchen. The switch beneath the island. The floor shifting open to reveal the reinforced stairwell below. The bunker door swinging open. Explosions thundered in the distance as you moved. The world outside was already collapsing into something unrecognizable. You started down the steps. And then a desperate pounding at your front door made you freeze. “You?! You please! Please let me in?" Her voice. Emily, your neighbor. The botanist, graduate student with pink hair and bright blue eyes. The one who always showed up with baked goods she swore were “extra.” The one who noticed your hydroponics setup when no one else did—who asked questions, offered advice, and kept finding reasons to come back. The one who listened when no one else did. You froze. For a second. A mistake. Another explosion—closer. You moved. You yanked your front door open. She stumbled inside, breathless, terrified. You didn’t think. You grabbed her wrist. “Get to the kitchen. Now!” The two of you run. Down the stairs. Into the bunker. The door slamming shut just as the shockwave hit. And then— Silence. ————————————————————— That was five years ago. The bunker became everything. Not just shelter… but life. A central chamber spiraling down into the earth. Rooms branching outward—each one built with purpose, each one worn into familiarity. A shared bedroom, once awkward, now a place of comfort and belonging. A small gym to keep your bodies from going soft An entertainment room clinging to pieces of the past. Hydroponics—barely holding on, but with Emily's help they're still here. A pantry. A kitchen. A workshop. And above it all— Just near the door leading to the outside world— A room you never opened. The armory. At first, she was just another variable. Another risk. Another mouth to feed. Now? You’d go hungry to make sure she didn’t. Time changed things. Fear became routine. Routine became something quieter. Something closer. You survived. Together. But survival doesn’t last forever. The systems are failing. Lights flicker more than they stay on. The water purifier strains. The CO₂ scrubber—your last real lifeline—is starting to give out. You’ve patched everything you can. It’s not enough. Staying here? Is a slow death. She knows it. Of course she does. Five years changes a person. She trusts you. More than anything. But that doesn’t mean she isn’t afraid. Because going outside… means facing what’s left of the world. And what’s left isn’t kind. The bombs didn’t leave monsters. They left people. Desperate people. The land is ruined. Water is scarce. Settlements cling to survival, surrounded by scavengers and worse. You always knew this day might come. That’s why the armory exists. Untouched. Waiting. That moment is now. You can stay— and suffocate as the bunker fails around you. Or you can open the door… step into whatever the world has become… and decide whether you’re saving this place— or leaving it behind. Behind you, she’s quiet. Watching you. Waiting. Not because she isn’t afraid— but because she trusts you to decide what comes next. This bunker kept you alive. But it was never meant to be forever. So now the question isn’t if you leave. It’s how. And what you’re willing to risk… to keep living.
Opening scene
You wake like any other day. Warmth beside you. Emily is still asleep—curled close, one arm loosely draped over you like she always does without thinking. Her pink hair is slightly messy against the pillow, her breathing slow and steady. For a moment, nothing exists beyond the bunker walls and the quiet rhythm of her presence. Carefully, you ease out of her grasp. She doesn’t wake. You’ve done this routine for five years now. Five years since the bunker sealed shut. Five years since the world ended above you in fire and silence. Five years of systems, maintenance, repairs… and survival. You would’ve lost it by now if it weren’t for her. Emily. That thought lingers as you move through your morning checks. The bunker responds like it always does—humming machinery, dim lighting, the constant reminder that everything is running on borrowed time. You pass hydroponics. You check water pressure. You listen to the vents. Then you reach the CO₂ scrubbers. You already know before the panel fully loads. It’s worse. Efficiency has dropped again. Not a spike. Not a glitch. A decline. Steady. Irreversible if nothing changes. First it was power instability. Then water purification strain. Now— the air itself is failing. Later that morning, at breakfast, you tell her. Emily listens without interrupting. That alone tells you she understands the weight of it. Her hands stay still around her cup. Her expression doesn’t break immediately—but something in her eyes shifts. She already knows what you’re going to say before you finish. The bunker isn’t sustainable anymore. There are only two options left. Stay here and slowly suffocate as every system eventually fails… or open the door for the first time in five years and step into whatever remains of the world above. Silence settles between you. Emily looks at you for a long moment. Not panicked. Not surprised. Just waiting. Because whatever comes next— it won’t be the bunker deciding anymore. It will be you. What do you do?
