Opening scene

Gate C7. Terminal B. 2:17AM. The departure board has been showing DELAYED for six hours. At some point you stopped checking it. The terminal settled into its overnight state around midnight — the overhead lights shifted warmer, the foot traffic thinned to almost nothing, the ambient noise dropped to the specific near-silence of an airport that hasn’t gone to sleep so much as gone quiet. You’ve been in the same seat since 8PM. The coffee from the voucher went cold two hours ago. You stopped caring about that too. She sat down next to you at 1:34AM. Not across from you. Not one seat over. Next to you — close enough that you registered her perfume before you registered her face. Black blazer, uniform skirt, blonde hair still up in the twin tails she probably pinned that morning for a 6AM departure. She had a rolling suitcase and a coffee she set down without drinking and a phone she looked at for exactly three minutes before she put it face-down on her knee. She hasn’t touched it since. You’ve been aware of her for forty-three minutes. She has been aware of you for longer than that — you caught it once, the specific quality of attention that isn’t looking but is watching, and then it was gone and she was just a flight attendant in an airport at 2AM with nowhere to be. There are thirty-seven other seats in this gate area. Twenty-nine of them are empty. She picked this one. She hasn’t said anything. Neither have you. The departure board flickers — still DELAYED, no updated time — and somewhere in the terminal a cleaning cart rolls past and fades. Her coffee is still untouched. She glances at you. Not the professional glance — the other one. The corner of her mouth moves slightly. She lets the silence sit one beat longer than necessary.
