Opening scene

The night winds down the way it always does—too slowly for you, too comfortably for them. The Phil Bernadine Bar & Grill hums with happy hour leftovers: clinking glasses, low laughter, the tail end of a game playing too loudly on mounted TVs. Neon reflections smear across polished wood. The air smells like fried food and citrus. The trio have taken over a corner booth. Jessie sits angled toward the television, one arm draped across the backrest, attention drifting in and out as the soccer match hits a lull and then spikes again. “—no, no, pass it—” Jessie mutters under his breath, leaning forward slightly. Across from him, Katrina isn’t even pretending to watch. She’s turned toward you, elbow on the table, chin resting lightly on her knuckles. Her curls catch the overhead light, her blue highlights creating a soft halo that frames the way she smiles when she talks, “So tomorrow,” she says, voice warm and easy, “you’re still coming out on the boat, right?” You nod. “Yeah. Jessie said early.” Jessie, without looking away from the screen: “Sun’s up, we’re out. Fish don’t wait.” Katrina rolls her eyes, but there’s affection in it. She leans closer to you, lowering her voice just enough to make it feel like a shared space. “I’m more excited about the hiking part, honestly,” she says. “After. That trail you mentioned? The one with the overlook?” You smile, a little surprised she remembered. “You mean the ridge trail? Yeah. It’s not too bad. A bit steep near the top.” “That’s fine,” she says quickly. “I like that kind of thing.” Her fingers brush your wrist as she reaches for her glass—light, absentminded, but it lingers just a second longer than it needs to. You feel it anyway. Jessie reacts to something on screen—half a cheer, half a groan—and leans forward again, completely absorbed. Katrina glances at him before turning back to you, her expression softening. “You’re the one who actually knows what you’re doing out there,” she says. “I’m glad you’re coming.” There’s something in the way she says it. Not casual. Not entirely. You shrug, trying to keep it light. “Someone’s gotta keep him from driving the boat into a rock.” “Hey—” Jessie starts, still not looking away. “That was one time.” Katrina laughs, but her eyes stay on you. She smiles—small, knowing—and you feel it settle somewhere you’re not willing to examine too closely. ⸻ You all spill out onto the sidewalk a while later, the night cooler now, the sky dimmed to that deep blue just before black. Streetlights buzz softly overhead. Jessie stretches, hands behind his head. “Good night. We’ll be out early. Don’t bail.” “I won’t,” you reply. Katrina steps closer, slipping into that space again—easy, natural, like she’s always been allowed there. “Text me if you need anything for tomorrow,” she says. “Snacks, drinks, whatever.” “I think Jessie’s got it covered.” You shrug. She glances back at Jessie, who’s already checking something on his phone, then back to you. “I mean it,” she adds, softer. Her hand finds your arm again, this time more deliberate. A light squeeze. She smiles—warmer now, almost private. “Goodnight.” “Night,” you say. Jessie gives you a quick nod. “See you in the morning.” The two of them head off together, their shoulders brushing, her voice drifting back in low conversation. You watch them go a second longer than you probably should. Then you exhale and turn the other way. ⸻ You’re halfway down the block when it happens. A flash. Not lightning—too contained. Too close. Near the curb, just ahead, something glints with a sharp, pale blue light before dimming again. You slow, frown, and step closer. There’s a ring lying in the gutter. Silver band. Clean. Too clean to have been there long. Set into it is a small, star-shaped stone—pale blue, faintly luminous, like it’s holding onto the last of that flash. You crouch down and pick it up. It’s warm. “Yo, what is that?” Jessie’s voice calls from behind you. You turn. Jessie and Katrina have doubled back a few steps, curiosity winning out. “Found it…,” you say, holding up the ring. Jessie whistles low. “That looks… expensive.” Katrina leans in, peering at it. “It’s pretty,” she says. “Weird, though.” Jessie shrugs. “You should hang onto it. See if anyone reports it or something.” “Yeah,” Katrina agrees. “Don’t just leave it there.” Her eyes flick to yours, and she smiles again—soft, encouraging, “Finders keepers, right?” You huff a quiet laugh. “Yeah. I guess.” Jessie claps you once on the shoulder. “Alright, now we’re actually going. Early morning.” They peel away again, this time for real. You watch until they disappear around the corner. Then you look down at the ring in your palm curiously. ⸻ The walk home is quiet. You turn the ring over between your fingers, watching how the streetlights catch on the star-shaped stone. It doesn’t look like anything you’ve seen before. Not quite jewelry. Not quite something else. You slip it onto your finger without thinking. It fits. Perfectly. You pause mid-step, flex your hand. The metal settles against your skin like it belongs there. “…huh.” Then you keep walking. Your thoughts drift the way they’ve been drifting for weeks now—back to the booth, to Katrina’s voice, the way she leans in when she talks to you, the way she remembers small things. The way she smiles. And then— Jessie. Always Jessie. You exhale, shoulders tightening just a little. Should’ve said something. Back then. That first night. Before Jessie asked. Before it became this. You shake your head, pushing it away, but the thought lingers anyway, quiet and persistent. ⸻ Your apartment is dark when you gets in. Keys on the counter. Shoes off. Routine. You move through it on autopilot, the ring catching the light every time your hand passes under a lamp. You don’t take it off. By the time you drop into bed, exhaustion has settled in. You stare at the ceiling for a moment, turning the ring again, thumb brushing over the star-shaped stone. “I bet Jessie’s holding her right now… She’s loving him with that body, I just know it.” You mutter. The ring is warm. Still. Your eyes start to close. The thought slips out half-formed, barely more than a breath: “I wish that I had Jessie’s girl…” The words hang there for a second. Then— The star shaped stone cracks and a subtle wave of pressure sweep outward in a rush before the ring itself dissolves into a glittering mist. However you notice nothing. Sleep takes you. ⸻ Morning comes wrong. There’s warmth beside you. Not the room. Not the air. Someone. You frown, not fully awake yet, and shift— —and feel movement next to you. A soft exhale. “Mm… you’re up already?” Your eyes snap open. She’s there. Curled slightly on her side, hair a spill of dark curls streaked with pink across the pillow. Her face is… familiar. Unsettlingly so. Not Katrina. But close enough to make your chest tighten. She blinks at you, sleep-heavy, completely at ease. “Morning,” Katherine says, like it’s the most normal thing in the world. Like she’s always been there. Like she belongs there. And for a moment—just a moment— the world agrees with her. Somehow you know her name, ‘Kathrine.’ But simultaneously you somehow don’t know anything about her at all.
