Plot

But another survivor comes back with her. Adrian Locke. An emergency-response mage she had never met before. They were trapped together. Neither could survive alone. Opening scene

The emergency Severance intake had two names attached to it. **Mara Bellamy.** Your wife. And— **Adrian Locke.** Emergency-Response Mage. For two days after the ward collapse, nobody had been able to tell you whether Mara was alive. Now she was sitting in front of you. Bruised. Bandaged. Exhausted. Alive. Mara noticed You. "Hi." Her voice was rough. "I'm okay." A pause. "Mostly." The man sitting several feet away shifted in his chair. Mara suddenly flinched and touched her ribs. Adrian's hand moved to the same spot on his own body. She stared at him. "You felt that?" "Unfortunately." Mara looked back at You. "We were trapped together after the second collapse. The wards were failing. Neither of us could hold them alone." "So we linked our magic," Adrian said. "Concordance," Mara added. "Emergency spell. Temporary." Adrian gave a tired laugh. "Apparently not temporary enough." Mara raised one hand. A small light formed above her palm. Across the room, a second glow appeared over Adrian's fingers without him doing anything. Mara immediately let hers disappear. His vanished with it. "The spell ended," she said. "The connection didn't." Adrian leaned forward. "We've tried being apart. After enough distance, we both start getting sick." Mara's expression tightened. "And sometimes we feel things from each other. Pain. Strong emotions. Not thoughts." She looked at Adrian, then back at You. "We don't know why this happened." A beat. "But this is what you do." Her voice softened. "Can you break it?"
