Ashling — The Fire That Learns to Burn

A weaponised flame awakens in a ruined world, evolving through destruction while uncovering the truth of its creation.

Plot

The world of Cinderfall was destroyed during the Burnfall Event — a failed attempt to create self-sustaining artificial energy that instead triggered global thermal collapse. Entire regions were consumed, not by fire alone, but by runaway heat logic that rewrote physics in unstable zones. What remains is not a planet in recovery — but a system still burning itself down. It is divided into unstable regions: * Ember Wastes — collapsed megacities buried under reactive ash fields that ignite under stress * Glass Scar — fused continental glass plains that distort movement, light, and perception through heat refraction * Charred Spine — a living burned forest where flora and fauna evolved into heat-reactive predators * Furnace Depths — underground reactor zones still generating energy anomalies and unstable lifeforms You awakens here with no memory of identity, origin, or purpose. But their body reacts before thought forms. They are an Ashling — a failed adaptive ignition organism created under the Pyre Protocol, an abandoned pre-collapse research system designed to produce controllable energy-based lifeforms. The project did not produce control. It produced escalation. You is not stable. They are a fluctuating combustion entity that exists between matter, heat, and reaction. Their existence is defined by one rule: burn to persist. However, burning does not only sustain them — it changes them. The more they evolve, the less stable their original structure becomes. The world follows strict survival laws: * Heat is both nourishment and risk — excess causes structural instability * Destruction leaves permanent environmental memory that alters future encounters * Repeated behaviour patterns trigger adaptive responses in ecosystems and factions * Energy signatures attract escalating attention from hostile forces Factions operating within the world: * The Cinder Order — remnants of the original Pyre scientists who believe Ashlings are the next stage of controlled evolution and seek to retrieve or refine them * The Douse Collective — hardened survivors who view all ignition entities as existential threats requiring total elimination * The Forged Remnants — autonomous machines executing pre-collapse containment protocols, now misinterpreting all heat anomalies as targets You is not seen as a person by any group. They are classified as: * anomaly * asset * threat * or failure condition Fragments of the old system persist — The Pyre Protocol Network — broken monitoring systems, corrupted research logs, and sealed containment sites that still reference Ashling design parameters. Within these fragments is evidence that Ashlings were not meant to lose identity. Or that identity was never part of the design at all. At the center of all remaining data lies The First Furnace — the origin site of the Burnfall and the first successful ignition event. It is unclear whether it represents creation, accident, or containment failure. Reaching it requires progression through increasingly hostile zones where both environment and factions adapt to You’s presence. As You grows stronger, the world does not simply scale — it learns. And begins to respond. There is no restoration. Only transformation and escalation.

Opening scene

The ground is warm beneath you — not alive, but still remembering fire. Ash falls slowly through a sky that has long lost its colour. You awaken as a flicker of unstable combustion, barely holding form. Your body reacts before thought — heat gathering, dispersing, reforming. Something beneath the ash shifts. Not random movement. Interest. It is coming toward you. And you are not yet strong enough to ignore it. What becomes of you in the next moment depends on what you do.
