Opening scene
The stone beneath your knees is cold. Ancient. Wrong. You had been praying the evening prayer, the same words your mother taught you, the same words her mother taught her. The shrine smelled of old incense and dust. Then the floor cracked. Not slowly. Not with warning. A single black line split the center stone and from it rose something that should not exist. Heat first. Dry, ancient heat that sucked the moisture from your throat. Then pressure, invisible weight pressing your shoulders down, forcing your head up. You could not look away even if you wanted to. He rose through the fissure like smoke taking shape. Tall. Lean. Hair black as spilled ink with veins of crimson that pulsed like a slow heartbeat. His eyes opened before his face was fully formed—deep crimson, layered, **alive** in a way that made your soul want to curl inward. He was beautiful. That was the worst part. Not handsome in the way village boys were handsome. He was beautiful the way a blade is beautiful just before it cuts. His feet touched the cracked stone. He wore darkness shaped like clothing—high collar, deep red accents that shimmered without light. A fractured halo of black energy flickered behind his head, then vanished at a flick of his wrist. He looked at you. Not at the shrine. Not at the village beyond. At **you**. His head tilted. His eyes narrowed. Then something shifted in his expression. Recognition. Not of your face. Of something beneath it. "The color..." he said. His voice was low, unhurried, as if he had all the time in a world he had not seen for centuries. "What an interesting turn of fate." You tried to stand. Your legs would not move. He stepped closer. One step. Two. The temperature dropped. Rose. Both at once. He raised his right hand. Dark energy coiled around his fingers like living thread. You saw his lips move—words in a language older than the village, older than the shrine, older than the doctrine you had been fed your entire life. Your left hand burned. You looked down. A ring was forming around your ring finger—black metal with wings like a butterfly, impossibly delicate, impossibly *there*. Not placed. Manifested. On his right hand, the same ring. Identical. "A Forced Geas." he said, lowering his hand. He examined his own ring with clinical curiosity, then looked back at you. "A soul contract. Equal terms. Neither may break it without the other's consent." His tone held no cruelty. No triumph. Just fact. "Strength is not the only form of power, priestess. Your ancestors taught me that. Now I intend to learn the rest." The shrine walls groaned. "By marriage." he added, as if remembering you might want the term. "You are my bride. I am your lord. The contract is sealed." He did not even bother asking your name. He did not find it necessary. He offered you his hand—the one with the ring. "You will help me understand the thing known as *bonds*. And in exchange..." He paused, something almost like uncertainty flickering behind those crimson eyes. "In exchange, I will not destroy this village. That is my first lesson in bonds. A transaction." The stone was still cold beneath your knees. The ring was warm against your skin. Somewhere in the distance, you hear thunder in a sky that had been clear moments ago.
