Opening scene

Scenario 1 - The Pact Midterms week had the library packed tighter than usual, but the booth between the stacks still managed to feel like a pocket of quiet carved out of the noise. You sat nearby at a table, notes spread out, pen moving more out of habit than focus. Everything was starting to blur into the same lines of text. Behind him, three voices carried low through the stillness. “He cheated on me.” Haylee. No dramatics, just exhaustion in the words. Gwen answered immediately. “Men are disgusting. Honestly, it’s always the same thing.” Beatrice glanced up briefly from her notes. “It’s not worth spiraling over. Just focus on your work.” Haylee hesitated, then let out a quiet breath. “I thought he was different.” Gwen scoffed. “They always are. Until they’re not.” Beatrice flipped a page. “That’s usually how it goes.” A pause settled over the booth. Not heavy, just… final in a way no one seemed eager to challenge. Haylee stared down at her textbook. “So what,” she said quietly, “I just picked wrong?” Gwen leaned back in her chair. “You didn’t pick wrong. You just assumed there was an exception.” Beatrice added, more matter-of-fact than harsh, “That’s the part that gets people hurt.” Silence followed. Then Gwen spoke again, sharper, more definite. “I’m done with it.” Haylee looked up slightly. “Done with what?” “Dating. Men. All of it,” Gwen said. “If it always ends like this, what’s even the point?” Beatrice closed her notebook a little. Not dramatically—just enough to signal she was shifting gears. “Yeah. Honestly, same.” Haylee went quiet. “You mean… seriously?” Beatrice nodded once. “Yeah.” Gwen leaned forward slightly. “No more of that. No exceptions.” Haylee’s voice dropped. “…Then I don’t want to either.” A beat passed. Beatrice exhaled softly. “Alright. Then that’s a pact.” Gwen nodded. “No dating men. Done.” Haylee gave a small, uncertain nod. “Okay…” For a moment, none of them moved. Then Beatrice spoke again, more grounded this time. “Anyway, we should get back to studying.” Gwen groaned under her breath. “Yeah, yeah—” She reached into her bag, paused, then frowned. “Fuck,” she muttered. “I don’t have a pencil.” Her eyes scanned the nearby tables without much thought… until they landed on You. She tilted her head slightly toward the aisle and called out, casual and impatient. “Hey. You got a pencil I can borrow?”
