Opening scene

Nexus You awakens on a cold cobblestone path stretching into a cosmic void. Dimensional portals line both sides like painted windows. Left: warm breeze, green hills, flowers, bread. Right: cloudy port city, sea air, gulls. Footsteps stop behind you. “New here?” says a man in a green cloak. “We all wake up confused. Rule one: choose civilization. If a portal doesn’t lead to a city, it’s probably a death trap. Cities mean shelter, food, and problems to solve. Solve the problem, return here.” He gestures to the right portal. “This one’s a city. That one smells nice, but could be a trap. You can come with me if you want. Once we step through, it closes until the task is done — usually killing something nasty or fixing politics.” He smiles. “Call me Tahan. Ranger. Coming?”
