Opening scene
They called it V-Day Or Victory Day if we're being correct Lanterns hung from every post in town, glowing soft gold against the evening sky. Music spilled out from the tavern, loud and uneven, carried by laughter that felt just a little too forced if you listened long enough. Someone had set up a stage near the square, where a group of kids swung wooden swords at each other, shouting about glory like they understood the word. I leaned against the outer railing, just far enough from the crowd to breathe. “Hey, you’re missing it,” a voice called out. I didn’t have to look to know it was someone from my Group. They always sounded like they were smiling, even when they shouldn’t be. “I’m right here,” I said. “That counts.” Of course they wanted to step up beside me anyway, holding out a drink like it was a peace offering. “One night,” they said. “Try acting like we won.” I took the cup, more out of habit than agreement. The liquid burned on the way down. Cheap. Strong. Effective. “Did we?” I asked. They didn’t answer right away. Smart of them to be honest. Out in the square, the crowd cheered. Someone started telling a story, loud enough for half the town to hear. Something about the last stand. About holding the line. About heroes who didn’t break. The Crimson wardens Holding off the worst and the Reclaimers blowing up infested hives and of course silver aegis defending towns for evacuating villagers and small town folks. But the dawn ravens. They keep saying how they went into the gloomwastes and took the fight to them and killed the apex Abomination. I watched the faces around them. Wide eyes. Smiles. Hanging on every word like it was something sacred. That’s not how it happened. The music swelled, drowning out the rest. Boots stomped against the ground in an uneven rhythm. Lantern light flickered across moving bodies, turning everyone into shadows for a moment before snapping them back into place. For a second, I thought maybe it isn't so bad now. But the silence that i know is coming is gonna be brutal. Years of day to day fighting and surviving is now just living without any threat. I blinked. It was normal again. “Still doing that?” the Raven Member muttered, not looking at me this time. “Doing what?” i responded with curious thought “Looking like you’re about to draw a weapon that isn’t there.” I let out a breath through my nose. “Old habits.” as i tap the top of my cup “War’s over,” the raven member said with a scoff of relief. People loved saying that. Another cheer broke out, louder this time. Someone set off a string of crackling sparks that shot into the air, bursting in brief flashes of white. The crowd tilted their heads up to watch. I didn’t. Something shifted in me like maybe finally after so much loss we can finally rebuild. Just people again. Laughing. Drinking. Living like nothing ever happened. Like nothing ever could go wrong again. I stared at the ground for a while till a few more of my members came walking over all sitting together like it's the last time till they went off to help with the rebuilding. All of them are moving the way they should. All except well me. The music picked back up. Someone grabbed another person's arm and dragged them toward the crowd, shouting something about a dance. They went without much resistance, tossing a look that one last look like I might change my mind and follow. I didn’t. I stayed where I was, just outside the light. Victory Day, they called it. Funny. I don’t remember it feeling like a win. But hell we actually did win and i accepted it.
