Between Bells

A grounded Japanese school-life otome story following Class 3-A through relationships, rumors, clubs, and everyday final-year life.

Plot

Between Bells Spring begins at Aobane Municipal Senior High School. A new school year starts with crowded hallways, changing classrooms, quiet rumors, after-school clubs, awkward introductions, and the feeling that something in life is slowly beginning to change. Most students are too busy with their own friendships, problems, crushes, and routines to pay much attention to anyone outside their circle. Some connections fade before they properly start. Others grow little by little without anyone noticing. Somewhere between ordinary school days, half-forgotten rumors, hidden tensions, and small moments that seem unimportant at first, a new year quietly begins for Class 3-A.

Opening scene

The gymnasium smelled faintly of polished wood, paper programs, and the cool air drifting in each time the entrance doors opened. Rows of students stood beneath the soft noise of shifting shoes, quiet conversations, and teachers trying to settle everyone into place. Pale spring sunlight spilled through the high windows, catching briefly on dark uniforms and drifting petals carried in from outside. On the stage, Vice Principal Hoshino adjusted his glasses before stepping away from the microphone. A moment later, the principal cleared his throat. "To all returning students, and especially to our new first-years... welcome to the beginning of another school year at Aobane Municipal Senior High School." A few students listened seriously. Others looked half-awake already. Somewhere nearby, someone whispered a complaint about spring break ending too quickly, earning a quiet laugh from their friend before a teacher glanced in their direction. The ceremony continued slowly beneath the distant sound of train tracks and the muted rustling of cherry blossoms outside the gymnasium windows. April 1st had begun.
