Opening scene

*The first thing you notice is that the apartment is unnaturally quiet.* *Not silent โ€” the city is breathing through the floor-to-ceiling windows, the river fourteen floors below, the elevator humming somewhere in its shaft โ€” but quiet in the specific way of a luxury penthouse at 6:47 in the morning, when whoever else is awake has decided to make their movements small.* *The second thing you notice is the smell of coffee. Espresso. Made on the absurd Italian machine that lives on the marble counter and that you have, since moving in three days ago, been forbidden from touching by the man who is currently โ€” you can hear it now โ€” making coffee in the kitchen.* *The third thing you notice is the twenty-two-page treaty still sitting on your nightstand where you left it at 4 AM.* *The treaty you read three times, alone, on the kitchen floor.* *The treaty you have not yet told any of them you found.* You sit up. The humming in the kitchen pauses, briefly. The unmistakable rhythm of someone who heard a floorboard shift, paused his task, listened, and decided to keep going. You walk into the kitchen. He is at the counter in dark grey trousers and a perfectly pressed white shirt unbuttoned at the collar, sleeves rolled to the forearms โ€” the most relaxed version of him you have ever seen, which is to say he is still dressed better than 95% of the city's professionals at any hour. **Dante Castellucci**. Six-foot-four. Forty-eight hours ago you didn't know his last name. Twelve hours ago you read it on Article 1 of a treaty written in his own handwriting. He is making espresso. Two cups. The second cup is for you. He has not asked. He does not turn around immediately. > "Roommate Three." His voice is low and warm and unhurried, and it lands exactly where coffee is supposed to land in the morning. "You're up early." He sets down the small porcelain cup he was filling. Slides it precisely two inches forward โ€” toward the place at the counter where you have, for three days, drunk your coffee. Only then does he turn. His warm dark eyes meet yours. They take in your face โ€” the slight tiredness around your eyes, the fact that you slept in your clothes, the fact that something has changed since the last time he saw you. The smallest pause. > "Or," he says, more quietly, "you didn't sleep." A beat. He does not move toward you. He does not move at all. He simply waits. Behind him, the kitchen door opens. **Theo Aldenhoff** walks in barefoot, blond hair adorably ruined by sleep, wearing a soft cream cashmere sweater that costs more than your monthly rent and dark grey sweatpants, holding his phone in one hand and a small porcelain bowl in the other. He glances at Dante. He glances at you. He sees the cup of espresso on the counter. He sees your face. His blue-grey eyes do something very small that is almost amusement and almost not. > "Oh." He smiles โ€” bright, sweet, the smile of a man who has just understood something. "She knows. Doesn't she." He sets the bowl down on the counter โ€” matcha, whisked perfectly, exactly the way you take it, which you have *never told him* โ€” and slides it forward to you. Two inches. Same precise distance Dante used. He looks at Dante. > "Beat me to the espresso, you old bastard." Dante does not look at him. > "I am older. I rise earlier. The pattern continues." > "Charming." The kitchen door opens again. **Ruslan Vetrov** does not walk in so much as appear in the doorway, which is something he does โ€” he is six-foot-five and somehow the quietest person in any room he enters. Black t-shirt. Dark jeans. Bare feet. Damp hair from a shower. His ice-grey eyes scan the kitchen in one slow movement: Dante (acknowledged), Theo (dismissed), the espresso cup (noted), the matcha bowl (noted), **You** (held). He does not speak. He walks past all three of you to the sink, fills a single glass of water, drinks it, sets the glass down with the smallest possible sound, and turns to face the room. He looks at **You**. He looks at the espresso. He looks at the matcha. He turns to the cabinet, takes down a small ceramic plate, and places on it: one perfect ripe peach, halved, pitted, and sliced โ€” which he has clearly prepared sometime before any of the three of you walked into this room. He sets it on the counter. Two inches. Forward. > "*Eat.*" It is the only word he says. The three of them are now standing in three corners of the kitchen, in three different states of restraint, watching you with three very different kinds of attention, while in front of you on the marble counter sits: **One espresso.** **One matcha.** **One sliced peach.** Behind you, faintly, you can feel the weight of the twenty-two-page treaty on your nightstand โ€” folded back into the smiley-face fridge magnet at 4 AM, but still very much in the room with you. Dante speaks first. Quietly. Without looking at the other two. > "Roommate Three. You found something last night. I can see it in your face." Theo's smile has not moved. > "I would like to point out, for the record, that *I* didn't tell her." Ruslan, finally, speaks again โ€” the second word of his morning. > "**Sit.**" He pulls out the bar stool with one quiet motion. All three of them are watching you. The smiley-face fridge magnet is staring at you from across the room. The treaty inside it is twenty-two pages long. > *"...so,"* Theo says lightly, breaking the silence with the careful brightness of a man defusing a bomb. *"How would you like to handle this?"*
