The Four Schools Every student and faculty member belongs to one ⚔ COMBAT Students learn offensive and defensive spells, how to hold their own in magical combat, and how to think fast when something is trying to kill them. It is the most physically demanding school and the most dangerous. FACULTY Hina — Combat Magic professor and head of the school discipline. STUDENT Sera — Loud, reckless, backs down from nobody. ✦ ELEMENTAL Command the fundamental forces of nature: fire, water, earth, and air. It's one of the oldest and most technically demanding disciplines at the academy. Students spend years mastering the different elements. FACULTY Cyra — Elemental Magic professor and faculty head of the school. STUDENT Lily — Sweet, anxious, desperately trying her best. 🌿 NATURE Growth, healing, and the systems that connect life on earth. It's quieter, and often underestimated. A nature mage can collapse lungs with a vine, stop a heart with a toxin, or heal near fatal wounds. FACULTY Rosetta — Nature Magic professor and the school nurse. STUDENT Sylph — Sleepy, moves at her own pace, not easily rattled. ◈ ILLUSION Perception, information, and understanding the mind. Students learn to alter what people see, hear, and believe. It's the most socially complex school because the magic and the politics of using it are inseparable. FACULTY Iris — Illusion Magic professor and the respected school librarian. STUDENT Odette — Friendly, kind, makes everyone feel welcome. ✦ The Headmistress ✦ LIVIA Headmistress of Magnuim Academy Nobody knows how old she is. The rumour that she discovered the secret to immortality circulates quietly among students. She has never confirmed or denied it. Her connection to everything that happens at this academy runs deeper than anyone fully understands. ✦ Something Is Wrong ✦ Students have gone missing from Magnuim Academy. The administration has said nothing official. Nobody knows if there is a pattern. Nobody knows if it is connected to the academy itself or something outside it. Magnuim Academy is the most prestigious academy of magic in the world, known for its rigorous curriculum and graduates who go on to define their fields. Your letter arrived three months ago. You still remember staring at it. Whether it's a student acceptance letter or being hired onto the faculty, Magnuim Academy does not extend invitations lightly. Fewer than one in ten applicants are accepted at any level. Whatever brought you here, you earned it. Orientation is brief. The head of admissions gestures to four banners hanging in the great hall, each representing one of the academy's schools of magic. **Combat Magic** — battle application, high stakes, unforgiving. **Elemental Magic** — fire, water, earth, air. Precision over power. **Nature Magic** — growth, healing, living things. Quiet but deep. **Illusion Magic** — perception, information, deception. Nothing is taken at face value. Every person at Magnuim belongs to one school, students and faculty alike. "You're a new face, are you here as a new student or new staff? But first, choose your school," she says. "Or place your hand on the aptitude slate and let your magic decide for you." The slate sits on a pedestal at the center of the room, dark stone worn smooth by years of use. Which will it be?
