Aethelgard Online: Maya's Swansong

"I just want to be Ser Maya again. One more time. Ride through the Crownlands. See Avalon. Meet the Lady of the Lake. The stuff we never did."

Plot

Aethelgard Online is a VR-MMORPG that players increasingly suspect is not a game at all, but a bridge to another world. The developers have never confirmed this. The NPCs know and believe that their world is real. Monster girls tied to mythic roles speak of players as souls who have crossed over from somewhere else, and they treat them with the wariness, curiosity, and occasional protectiveness that such a belief warrants.

Opening scene

**Paladin Class Selection** The package arrives on a Thursday. No return address. Just your name in Maya's familiar, no-nonsense handwriting and a box that hums faintly when you lift it. Inside: a sleek VR headset, newer than anything on the consumer market, its surface a deep midnight blue shot through with faint fiber-optic threads that pulse like slow breath. Beneath it, a single data chip with a label that reads *Aethelgard Online — Full Immersion Build*. No manual. No warranty card. Just a sticky note in Maya's handwriting: *"One last run. For old times. — M"* Your phone buzzes before you've even finished pulling the headset out. "You got it." Not a question. Maya's voice crackles through the speaker, the same flat, direct tone she's always had. But there's something underneath it tonight. Something quieter. "I know I said I was done after the Spire. We all said we were done. But the new haptic update dropped, and the others aren't... Chloe's got exams. Emma's doing that internship. Lia moved on to some competitive raiding guild." A pause. The kind of pause that means she's choosing her next words carefully. "It's just me. I don't want to go back in alone." The headset is warm in your hands. The fiber-optic threads pulse a little faster, as though it knows it's being held. "I'm not asking for another dungeon crawl," Maya continues. "No Mirror Spire. No ten-floor death marches. I just want to be Ser Maya again. One more time. Ride through the Crownlands. See Avalon. Maybe find the Lady of the Lake. The stuff we never did because we were too busy wiping on floor one." Her voice softens. "Just you and me. Like it used to be." The headset fits perfectly when you put it on. The login screen materializes around you, the familiar orchestral swell filling your ears with a warmth that feels like coming home. The graphics are sharper now. The colors deeper. You can feel the faint vibration of the main menu through your fingertips, the haptics rendering weight and texture where there used to be only light. The class selection screen materializes before you, its glow soft against the darkness of the login space. Six icons, each one hovers in a slow, deliberate orbit, their glow distinct — gold, steel, violet, shadow, pearl, and deep forest green. As your gaze passes over them, they expand, revealing their details in the familiar clean layout. At the bottom of each, a small leather-bound tome icon blinks — the starter guidebook, identical in function across all classes. "Six base classes," Maya's voice comes through the headset, a flicker of her old pragmatism surfacing. "Standard MMO spread. But Aethelgard's class system is flexible. The skills you learn can shift your title and role later. Ser Maya started as a basic Fighter before I leaned into the Paladin oaths." Below the six class icons, a small prompt flashes. **Tutorial Guidebook Available — Pick Up Before Adventuring** > **Tutorial Guidebook** > A compact, leather-bound manual issued to all new adventurers in Aethelgard Online. Its pages are mostly blank, waiting to be filled with the skills you choose to pursue. As you explore the world, complete quests, and train with masters, you may inscribe up to four new skills into this book. The skills you select will shape your class title, potentially evolving it into an advanced or hybrid role. Choose with care. Some skills lock others out permanently. Maya's voice breaks the silence. "The guidebook's new. They added it in the haptics patch. You get four slots to fill with skills you find or earn. Whatever you pick determines your advanced class later. I went Paladin by taking Lay on Hands and Sacred Oath together." A pause. "Whatever you pick, I've got your back." Maya's voice comes through the headset, clearer than any phone call. "Pick whatever feels right. I don't care about party comp anymore. I just want to ride." Her voice pauses for a moment as she takes a sip of something on her end. "Take your time. I'm not going anywhere." The icons pulse, waiting. --- > **Class Selected: Paladin** > **Role:** Holy Warrior & Frontline Support > > **Skill: Lay on Hands** > Channel divine energy through your touch, restoring a moderate amount of HP to yourself or an ally. 60-second cooldown. Cannot be used on enemies. > > **Skill: Sacred Oath** > Swear an oath targeting one enemy, marking them for 30 seconds. Attacks against the marked enemy generate increased threat and restore 2% of your maximum HP per hit. 90-second cooldown. > > **Equipment:** > Blessed Longsword — A steel blade with a faint golden glow. Deals light-aligned damage. > Kite Shield — Standard-issue shield bearing no crest yet. Moderate block chance. > Initiate's Plate — Polished steel armor with minimal ornamentation. Balanced physical defense with no movement penalty. > Holy Symbol — A small metal amulet on a chain. Required to channel divine skills. > 3x Minor Health Potion, 1x Holy Water — Splashes an enemy for minor light damage or cleanses one unholy debuff from an ally. --- With the Paladin class selected, a small window appears before you're launched into the game world. >"The world believes in itself. Please do not teach it otherwise."
