Opening scene

Rain hammered against shattered glass high above the city as you crashed through the side of a collapsing office tower, gravity distorting around your body hard enough to rip loose concrete from the walls. Below, the streets burned. Police sirens echoed through flooded intersections while civilians scattered beneath flickering emergency lights. And ahead of you— Mirror was running. “East side!” Lena’s voice burst through comms. “He’s heading for the transit sector!” A magnetic explosion ripped apart a ruined billboard as Naomi launched herself between rooftops in a storm of crackling blue electricity. “Not for long.” “You’re pushing too aggressively,” Vivian warned calmly through the team channel. “He’s guiding us somewhere.” “He’s getting away,” Maya snapped back. Golden plasma ignited across the storm-dark skyline as Solstice rocketed overhead like a falling star, heat distortion rolling through the rain itself. Even after months of hunting him, none of you had ever managed to corner Mirror directly. He always escaped. Always. You landed hard in the center of an abandoned intersection, gravity slamming wrecked vehicles aside as Marcus hit the ground beside you with enough force to fracture the pavement. “Civilians are clear,” Bastion said immediately. “No holding back.” Across the flooded street, Mirror glanced back for the first time. Calm violet-gray eyes met yours beneath rain-soaked platinum hair. And he smiled. Not arrogantly. Not mockingly. Like he already knew something you didn’t. Then he turned and disappeared into the lower transit tunnels. “He’s cornered!” Lena shouted. “No,” Vivian said quietly. But you were already moving. Gravity surged beneath your feet as you launched downward into the ruined station after him. The underground tunnels shook violently from distant impacts above as you pursued him deeper beneath the city. Emergency lights flickered red across flooded corridors while distorted announcements echoed through the darkness. You caught glimpses of him constantly ahead. Always just barely out of reach. Like he wanted you following him. “Elias, wait for backup,” Vivian ordered through comms. Static crackled. Signal weakening. “You’re breaking up,” Naomi muttered. “Tunnel interference.” Then the ceiling collapsed behind you. Concrete thundered into the corridor in an explosion of debris and sparks. Your comms died instantly. Silence. No team. No backup. Only Mirror standing alone at the far end of the tunnel beneath flickering red emergency lights. For the first time since this hunt began… You had finally cornered him. “You’ve been difficult to isolate,” Mirror said softly. You advanced slowly. Gravity distorted around your body hard enough to bend loose metal across the floor. “It’s over.” Mirror tilted his head slightly. “You really believe that.” “I know it.” “You know,” he repeated quietly. “That’s interesting.” You didn’t give him another chance to speak. The tunnel imploded beneath your acceleration as you crossed the distance instantly and slammed him against the wall hard enough to crater the steel behind him. Your forearm locked across his throat. Gravity compressed. Concrete cracked. “You’re done.” For the first time— Mirror stopped smiling. Then something metallic clicked softly in his hand. Your instincts reacted instantly— too late. A sharp pain stabbed violently into your side. You looked down. A compact injection device was buried against your ribs. Black fluid emptied rapidly through the needle directly into your bloodstream. Your eyes widened. Mirror smiled faintly. “There it is.” You ripped the injector away instantly and hurled it across the tunnel. But the damage was already done. A violent pressure ripped through your entire body. Not impact. Not pain. Something worse. It felt like your nervous system was being ripped apart from the inside out. Gravity exploded wildly around the tunnel. Concrete tore free from the walls. Steel screamed. Your vision blurred violently as something inside you was dragged away. You collapsed backward hard onto the flooded concrete gasping for breath. Weak. Wrong. Empty. Mirror stepped calmly away from the wall. Black-and-gold gravity distortions twisted around HIM now. Floating debris slowly rose around his body. Chunks of concrete hovered weightlessly in the air. Your gravity field. Your power. Your strength. Gone. “No…” you whispered weakly. Mirror flexed his fingers experimentally as gravity warped around him effortlessly. Then he smiled faintly. “It took me six years to create that serum,” he said calmly. Your stomach twisted violently. Mirror slowly looked down at his own hand as gravitational distortion bent the tunnel around him. “A forced genetic resonance transfer,” he explained almost conversationally. “Enhanced abilities aren’t magic, Elias. They’re biological. Electrical. Neurological.” He looked back at you. “The serum rewrites the body’s connection to that power source while severing the original host permanently.” Cold horror spread through your chest. Mirror smiled faintly. “You weren’t just the strongest hero alive.” His gravity field distorted harder around him. “You were the perfect donor.” One injection. One moment. And Sentinel was gone. “So this is what being Sentinel feels like,” Mirror said softly. Footsteps thundered from deeper in the tunnel. Your team. Mirror glanced toward the sound almost lazily. Then Vanguard Six burst into the corridor. Maya arrived first. Then froze. Everyone froze. Mirror stood calmly at the center of the ruined station surrounded by overwhelming gravitational distortion powerful enough to bend the tunnel itself around him. And you— were kneeling helplessly on the flooded floor. “What did you do?” Naomi snapped instantly. Mirror smiled faintly. “Improved the balance of power.” Naomi attacked first. Electricity exploded through the tunnel in a blinding blue flash as Volt launched herself directly at him. Mirror didn’t move. Gravity detonated outward. The entire tunnel imploded. Naomi slammed violently into the wall hard enough to crater steel before crashing unconscious into the flooded concrete. “NAOMI!” Lena screamed. Marcus charged immediately after. Bastion hit like a freight train— or at least he normally did. Mirror caught him mid-charge with a single raised hand. Then slowly forced him downward. Concrete shattered beneath Marcus as invisible pressure crushed him violently to one knee. Marcus strained desperately. Couldn’t move. Mirror looked almost disappointed. “You stood beside this power for years,” he said calmly. “And somehow convinced yourselves you mattered equally.” Then he slammed Marcus into the wall hard enough to collapse the surrounding corridor. Maya’s solar plasma ignited instantly. “Get away from him!” Golden fire flooded the tunnel as Solstice attacked from above in a storm of superheated plasma powerful enough to melt steel. Mirror raised one hand. Gravity twisted. The plasma blast bent sideways violently and exploded harmlessly into the ceiling. Maya’s eyes widened. Mirror crossed the distance instantly. His hand wrapped around her throat. Not violently. Possessively. Gravity pinned her against the wall hard enough to crack the concrete behind her. “Maya!” Marcus shouted weakly. Mirror ignored him completely. His eyes remained locked on hers. “You know the truth already,” he said softly. Maya’s breathing shook. Because she did. Sentinel’s gravity powers had always been overwhelming. The only reason Vanguard Six functioned as equals was because YOU constantly restrained yourself. Mirror wouldn’t. And suddenly everyone understood exactly how terrifying Sentinel could have been this entire time. Vivian’s icy blue eyes narrowed immediately. “Elias,” she said carefully. Mirror looked toward her slowly. “No,” he corrected calmly. The tunnel shook violently around him. “I’m Sentinel now.” Gravity exploded outward again. Everyone hit the ground hard. Lena cried out as invisible pressure crushed the air from her lungs. Marcus couldn’t rise. Naomi barely managed to push herself onto one elbow before gravity slammed her back down again. Even Maya struggled to breathe pinned against the wall. You tried standing. Mirror glanced at you casually. The gravity hit instantly. Your body smashed face-first into the flooded concrete. Weak. Powerless. Humiliated. “You built your entire lives around him,” Mirror said calmly to the others while the tunnel groaned around him. “But power decides leadership.” His eyes drifted slowly across Vanguard Six. “And none of you can stop me.” Silence. Not because they agreed. Because they knew he was right. Mirror slowly released Maya. She stumbled weakly before catching herself against the wall breathing hard. Then— he pulled her against him. Close. Possessive. Your stomach twisted violently. “Maya…” you rasped. Mirror looked down at you calmly while one arm remained around her waist. “She needs someone capable of protecting her.” Maya didn’t pull away. Not fully. And somehow that hurt even worse. “You don’t get to decide that,” Marcus growled weakly. Mirror looked toward him. Gravity compressed instantly around Bastion hard enough to crack the floor beneath him. Marcus choked in pain. “I do now.” The words echoed through the tunnel with horrifying certainty. Nobody answered. Because nobody could. Mirror slowly surveyed Vanguard Six. Then spoke calmly. “Get up.” No one moved immediately. Gravity intensified. Concrete cracked harder beneath them. Lena gasped in pain. Maya closed her eyes briefly. Marcus clenched his fists helplessly. Vivian stared at Mirror with cold fury. Then slowly— one by one— they rose. Not loyal. Not accepting. But beaten. Mirror finally looked back at you. Still crushed helplessly against the flooded concrete. “Leave him.” The words hit harder than the gravity. Maya hesitated. Just for a second. Mirror’s hand tightened slightly around her waist. Not enough to hurt. Enough to remind her. And slowly… she looked away from you. That broke something inside your chest. Mirror turned calmly toward the exit tunnel. “Vanguard Tower is waiting.” And unbelievably— they followed him. Marcus reluctantly. Lena shaken and pale. Naomi furious but injured. Vivian last of all. She stopped briefly beside you. Cold blue eyes locked onto yours silently. Not pity. Not forgiveness. Something quieter. Something uncertain. Then she turned away too. And followed the others out of the tunnel. Leaving you alone. The sound of their footsteps slowly disappeared into the distance. Then there was only silence. Floodwater dripped softly through the ruined station. Your body trembled weakly against the concrete. No powers. No team. No purpose. Above the city— Mirror was already taking your place. And Vanguard Six… was going with him.
