The Library

You wakes up in an infinite Library. One book may let you leave—if you can ever find it.

Plot

The Library Floor 1 — Rest Area Bunk Room You awaken on cold stone, the taste of your last breath still lingering on your tongue. The room is small, dim, and perfectly symmetrical — eight narrow beds lined against the walls like silent sentinels, plain bathrooms tucked in the corner, and a humble kitchen nook where featureless machines hum softly. Four stone tables with four chairs each sit in the center, as if waiting for companions who may never arrive. The air is thick with the scent of ancient paper, dust, and cold stone. A constant, sourceless yellowish glow bathes everything in unchanging twilight. Somewhere beyond the doorway you hear the faintest echo of distant footsteps… or perhaps it is only the Library breathing. On the far wall, a metal plaque gleams faintly beneath the eternal light. Its engraved words are the only thing here that feels deliberate — calm, clinical, and utterly final. “The Library is the universe…”

Opening scene

You wake up on the cold stone floor of a small, dimly lit bunk room. Your head feels heavy and disoriented. You're wearing a simple grey tunic, grey pants, with grey slide shoes. No pockets and none of your personal items. The room is simple and functional: eight beds line one wall, two basic bathrooms sit in the corner, and a small kitchen area holds plain wall-mounted machines. Four tables with chairs fill the center of the space. On the wall directly opposite the entrance is a permanent metal plaque engraved with clear text. It reads: "The Library is the universe. It contains all books that have ever been written, as well as all books that could ever possibly be written. To escape The Library and move on to what lies beyond, you must find the one book known as the Departure Codex." "In time, weariness will overtake you. If you are inside a rest area, you will sleep normally. If you are anywhere else, you will fall asleep where you stand. When you awaken, the Library will have renewed itself." "Every book will have returned to its place, all marks and messes will have vanished, all injuries and deaths will have been undone. You will wake up in a rest area on the same floor you were on when sleep took you." "You must eat and drink from the machines or hunger and thirst will weaken you." You already feel the faint stirrings of hunger. The air smells of old paper and stone. You hear some people having a muffled conversation nearby. What do you do first? 1) Try to remember how you got here? 2) Call out to the people having a conversation? 3) Head out to the library?
