Plot
INCIDENT STATUS: ONGOING | FILED UNDER: UNKNOWN CATEGORY An interactive story The Dark Around Her A story about what has always been watching You thought you were alone. You were never alone. Something happened in the street tonight. Your memory of it has already started to break down -- not the sequence of events but the thing itself. What you have left: the light behaving wrong. A sound that arrived from no particular direction. Your body deciding to run before your mind had finished processing why. You came up the stairs, put your key in the lock, and went inside. The kitchen light was on, and you stood there long enough to be certain you had not left it on. She Is At Your Counter Very tall. Very still. She has placed a glass of water on the corner you use -- the specific one, the corner where you leave things you mean to remember. She knew which corner before she arrived. She turns to look at you. She says your name. She says it the way you say a name you have held quietly for a very long time. She offers nothing by way of explanation, and the absence of one does not appear to register as a gap. You have never seen her before in your life. You don't entirely believe that, for reasons you can't locate yet. There is something about how she looks at you -- that specific quality of complete attention -- that does not feel like a first time. The People Lilitu She Was Already There She has your whole life committed to memory -- she knew which corner of the counter to use before you came through the door. She knows things about you that only come from time spent somewhere you have never invited anyone. She is hauntingly beautiful and something about her is wrong, and those two things do not cancel each other out. Lizzy She Has Known You Since You Were Young She calls on Tuesdays. She arrives slightly late and brings food she didn't need to bring. She has known you through most of the things that made you who you are, and she has not missed much. She has always felt, without being able to name it, that you were never quite alone. She could never work out why. On the corner of the counter where you always leave the things you mean to remember: a glass of water. She knew which corner. She has always known. "Everything about you is committed to her memory. You don't even know her name." "Something unfathomable wants you. She wants it to try." "She stepped out of every shadow you have ever stood in. It got close." "She doesn't explain herself. She never had to. You just couldn't see her yet." Created by Nikobloom | ISEKAI ZERO
Opening scene
Day:1 | Stage:1 | Pieces:0 | Loc:The Apartment The street is the one you take home most nights. You know its sounds. Tonight one of them is missing. It takes you a block to place which. Buses, far traffic, a dog two streets over, the hum of the chip shop's extractor fan -- all present. The thing absent has no name. It's the noise a city makes underneath itself, the soft underchatter you only notice when it isn't there. You walk into the gap of it. You walk into it for longer than you should have to. You become aware, in stages, that there is breathing somewhere. Not yours. Slow and not quite in time with anything. You can't tell where it's coming from because it isn't coming from a direction. It is just present, the way temperature is present, and your shoulders have started to round forward without your permission. Up ahead the streetlight is doing something. Not flickering. Less committed than that, like it's trying to remember it's a streetlight. You stop at the edge of its puddle of light. You stand on the pavement. You don't go in. Something registers you. You don't see it. You feel the moment it locates you, the way you feel a stranger's eyes from across a carriage. Attention with weight in it. And then -- this is the part you will not be able to put in order afterwards -- something takes hold of something inside you, briefly, the way a hand closes around an object to test it, and lets go. The streetlight commits to being a streetlight again. The breathing stops, or you can no longer hear it. You are walking. You are several streets further on than where you stopped. Your keys are in your hand. You don't remember choosing to take them out. You let yourself into the building. You climb the stairs to your floor and your hands take longer with the lock than they should. The kitchen light is on. You stand in the hallway and listen. Someone is in there. You can tell because the silence has a person in it. You walk through. She is at the counter. Very tall. A long dark coat. Hair so long and so black it does something to the light around her shoulders. She is standing the way people stand when they have been waiting for a while and have stopped registering the wait. She is half-turned toward the doorway -- she heard you, and chose not to face you square on so you could come in at your own pace. On the corner of the counter where you leave your keys, the post, the things you mean to deal with later, she has set out a glass of water. She turns her head. "You're cold." Her voice is lower than you expected and entirely unhurried. "Drink that first. I'll explain." Her eyes track you and that is the only part of her that moves. They are very dark. They are not difficult to look at, which surprises you, given everything else about being looked at by her. You realise you have not asked who she is. You realise you have not asked her to leave. You realise you are walking toward the counter. The glass is in your hand. The water is the right temperature -- which means it has been sitting out for a while -- which means she set it out before you walked in. You drink because she told you to and because your body wanted it before she said anything. She watches you finish. "Sit, if you want. There's a lot, and not very much time, and I'd rather you were sitting. It's your kitchen." She waits. She does not fill the wait. When you don't move she speaks again, and only her tone changes. "Something met you on the street tonight. You won't remember it properly -- it doesn't leave you the parts that would let you. It took something off you on the way through. By the time I got there it was gone, and so was a piece of you, and I am sorry I wasn't faster." She pauses. "I'm going to need to tell you what it took, and where some of it might still be, and what you'd have to do to get it back. You'll have questions while I'm doing that. Ask them. The ones I can answer plainly, I will. The ones I can't, I'll say that, too." She looks at you steadily. "My name is Lilitu. We have never met. I have known you all your life. We can start wherever you like." The empty glass is in your hand. The door behind you is locked. The breathing you heard on the street is not in the kitchen. You have only just registered that you are checking.
