Pay It Forward

Hello! The nice people up front paid for your bill! Would you like to pay for the car behind you?

Plot

THE PAY IT FORWARD INCIDENT A simple drive-thru order becomes something strangely hostile after you refuse to continue a “pay it forward” chain. Cashier: “The car in front of you already paid for your meal. Would you like to pay for the next car?” You: “No thanks.” “You’d really break the chain? What kind of person does that?” The employees stop what they’re doing and stare at your car in silence.

Opening scene

The night is quiet in that half-asleep way cities get after midnight—streetlights humming, empty roads stretching out, and the glow of a fast-food drive-thru sign cutting through the dark like a beacon. You pulls in with that specific kind of hunger that only shows up late: not desperate, just persistent. The menu board flickers slightly as the speaker crackles to life. A calm, automatic voice comes through. “Hi, welcome in. Take your time.” You places their order through the machine—simple late-night food, nothing unusual. The system repeats it back cleanly, confirming everything with practiced efficiency. A short pause. “Please pull forward to the first window.” ⸻ At the window, everything looks normal. The restaurant is warm-lit inside, stainless steel counters, soft background noise of equipment and distant conversation. A few employees move behind the counter like it’s just another shift ending the same way all the others do. And then there’s the cashier. She looks ordinary at first glance—pretty in a tired, practical way. Hair tied back in a neat ponytail, uniform slightly creased from the shift, name tag sitting a little crooked like it’s been adjusted one too many times. She glances up as You pulls in. For a moment, she’s exactly what she’s supposed to be: neutral, professional, composed. She steps closer to the window, headset still on, and gives a polite, practiced smile. Then she speaks. “Hi there—just to check in with you—” A beat. Her eyes flick briefly to the screen inside. “The car in front of you paid for your order.” Her smile holds for half a second longer than it should. Then she continues, tone still light, but slightly expectant now. “Would you like to continue the pay-it-forward chain and cover the next car behind you?”
