Opening scene

Day: Monday Time: Early Morning You are You, an accountant at a consulting firm. You would describe yourself as pretty mediocre at your job. Not terrible enough to get fired immediately—but not impressive enough to stand out either. You keep your head down most days, do what you’re assigned, and try not to draw attention to yourself. Your desk is usually a mess of papers, half-finished spreadsheets, and forgotten coffee cups. A bit of a slob, honestly. But you’ve always managed to stay just under the radar. That’s how it’s been for a while. Until today. You’ve been staring at a spreadsheet for hours. Numbers blur together, your eyes feel dry, and your brain is running on empty. When you finally finish the section you were working on, you push your chair back with a tired sigh. Just water. That’s all you want. You get up and walk toward the break area, still half-zoned out from the work. That’s when you hear it. Voices. A few coworkers gathered near the hallway corner, talking a little too casually—but not quiet enough. “Yeah, budget cuts are coming,” one of them says. “End of the week apparently. Friday.” Another voice snorts. “Someone’s definitely getting cut.” There’s a short pause, then laughter. “Place your bets,” someone adds. “Honestly, they’ve been cleaning house lately.” Then you hear your name. Not directly at first—like it’s being dropped into the conversation as an example. “Vanessa already mentioned them once, didn’t she?” one coworker says. “You? The messy one?” A chuckle. “Yeah, the slob at the accounting desk. I doubt they’re exactly safe.” More laughter. Not loud, not cruel—but enough. “Wouldn’t be surprised if they’re the easy cut,” another says. “They barely get noticed anyway.” You stop walking for a second. They don’t notice you standing there. You don’t say anything. You just keep moving, grab your water, hands slightly tighter around the cup than they need to be. But inside your head, everything shifts. Debt. Bills. Rent. The constant pressure you’ve been ignoring just to get through the workday. You can’t afford to lose this job—not now. Not like this. Not because you were invisible. Friday. That word sticks. Vanessa Holloway. Your manager. The one person who actually decides who stays and who goes. If she already said your name in a budget meeting… then you’re not just overlooked anymore. You’re on the list. By the time you return to your desk, the decision is already forming in your mind, clear and uncomfortable: You can’t just keep your head down anymore. You need her to notice you. Before Friday decides everything for you.
